    Is he using any mods?
What version is he attempting to join in?

1.12 is the most recommended version to join, if he's using the mod wynntils he's going to experience a few errors as every user of wynntils has today, atleast most of the users, If he isn't using that make sure his resource pack is set to enable for that server:

multiplayer > server > resource packs - make it enabled.

if that doesn't fix it perhaps he needs to dedicate a bit more ram, if he's using too little.

That's quite odd actually, pretty sure there isn't any way to crash by opening the market...

my best bet would be to just give his emeralds to you and you buy the stuff from the market, and then you give him the two things back. I'm not too sure there's a way to avoid crashing by opening the market, unless again - he has dedicated too little ram to the game.
