My 12 year old son wants to join, and I'm totally enthused to have him play wynncraft. But I'm also wanting to prepare myself on what bad things he should be on the lookout for and I should be aware of.
Since there are no mods required that makes it more safe. Will he need to voice talk to participate and enjoy the community? Does the game provide a full PvM experience, or is most of the content in PvP?
    What are the demographics like?
Is this pay to win, or is this mostly supported with cosmetic microtransactions?

    1) No
    2) PvP is essentially nonexistent, the game is balanced around PvE
    3) The second. The closest are double xp/dungeon/loot/item bombs, which are bought by one person but will activate for everyone on the server.

No mods are required, you can go through the almost entire game as a solo player. PvP is also not a focus, and the microtransactions are purely for cosmetics.
Now, the game does feature some blood and some very rare swearing, with a bit of somewhat dark topics in the later levels. Though if your son is 12, I'm sure it'll be fine!

Do to EULA which Mojang introduced some years ago, servers which follow the EULA rules essentially can't provide payable add ons which only help the single player, giving them an unfair advantage. So anything your son could buy, wouldn't be necessary to doing well in the game.

Majority of the server's content is focused around being a singleplayer experience. It's essentially a world where you can randomly encounter someone else, who's also playing the game. No voice chat is required, nor would it even be possible via minecraft itself. I'd say roughly 99% of the community revolves around the ingame chat system, the forums, and Wynn's own discord, which are all text based systems. As for the playerbase's age demographic, there are people from all ages, but the majority seems to fit in between 10 and 20, due to MMORPGs being a tad bit more complex genre than a typical linear game. Your son is likely to fit in well with the community, if they choose to do so.

As for pay to win content, that'd be against minecraft's EULA, and would get the server blacklisted. For obvious reasons, Wynn doesn't do that. 100% of the game's content is available without ever having to pay a dime, and if someone does decide to support the server in terms of money, such as buying and using XP boosting bombs, everyone on the server will also be able to take use of them. However, for personal use, people can buy cosmetic skins and pets, if they want to support the server's development.

Im not sure how you would be on swearing/blood so its worth mentioning we have toggles for both - /toggle swears and /toggle blood. Toggling swearing will simply censor any swearing in chat from players (we do allow it, as long as it is not directed at players and is not a slur etc). Toggling blood will disable the blood effect when attacking mobs, though i wouldnt say this is as noticable

Wynncraft, like all MMORPGs do, has its fair share of PvE, quest cutscenes, and fighting in general. Some quests such as Memory Paranoia shows some amount of blood in its cutscenes, and quests like Shattered Minds indirectly reference drug usage. Quests like Beyond the Grave has a bit of a jumpscare thrown into it, and a few areas in the map and NPCs reference dark topics such as occultism and sacrifice etc. We allow players to swear in moderation but you can do /toggle swears if need to, to block out vulgarities in the chat. There are microtransactions but they are purely cosmetic, e.g. giving your child weapon skins, hats, player effects etc.

Wynncraft is recommended for above ages of 13 but if your child does not have any issues of serious addiction in general, the game should be fine for him.

Thank you all. The community seems quite supportive and responsive. I'll give the OK to let him play. I find it amazing that you've created curse filters w/o mods. I'm not worried about the blood as minecraft's low texture resolution only lets gore get so bad.
I'm super excited to let him play, and use our second account to join him when I get home from work. Thanks everyone.

Even though everyone else covered most of the things to look out for, I think there are 2 more points to cover:
Even though the chat filter exists, it doesn’t really stop you from seeing the general idea in someone message - some people say some really weird things which are not meant for younger kids, and the chat filter doesn’t really stop you from seeing it. I would suggest that you tell your son to not pay much attention to chat, and not respond to most messages, because the community also has some very creative insults.
Wynncraft has a TON of things to do, so if your child has had problems with addiction, I think you should watch out. Especially if he does things like trading with players or guilds, the server will often leave you wanting to play more.

Regarding addiction, he gets computer time through reading/chores, so any addiction drives him to get more reading in which limits how bad it can get. We've also raised him to be introspective and he has taken the initiative to hand us the spare smartphone in the house before bedtime so he isn't tempted to spend his mornings watching minecraft on youtube before we get up. Note he is a very early bird. He is aware enough of himself to see addiction and put up safeguards. He has been very good when we give him more freedoms, and joining a server is the next step into the wild for him. I'll be playing alongside him when I get home from work so I can see the kinds of stuff buzzing around the community and see how he reacts with it. Based on what I've seen teens ask for on reddit is early engagement and freedoms and he knows how trust is earned and lost, and I trust him.

Speaking of trade, is there a market? What is the etiquette for requests to trade? I'm familiar with Path of Exile, if that helps. Is there a standard currency like a core set of crafting materials who's rarity scale with level? After 6 years of the server being up I'd expect some standards to exit.

There is a market, but at the moment it is broken, but the content team is working hard to get it back up and running. That being said, your son can still trade with other players using the /trade command.

Sounds like hes very mature - he'd be very welcome on the server
As far as trading goes, there is a trade market on forums where people arrange buying/selling items and then meet ingame to trade. There was an ingame trade market for a bit where you could add items at a certain price, or look for items which other people have put up. This is currently down but will hopefully be back up soon (it will probably be announced when it is back up).
There is standard currency - emeralds, which you get by completing quests, killing mobs (only a small amount) and selling items.
There is also quite a big trade in materials/ingredients for crafting which is one of the newer big features

Yes. There's an official in-game trade market, but it's currently down due to a bug. However, players can also trade without the use of this market.

    Yes, emeralds.

Most of the trading community is aware of the accepted/usual prices for most items, and scamming (i.e. overcharging/lowballing excessively) is prohibited on the server.

If he joins, I'll be ready to teach him things. If we ever see eachother, that is.
The currency is an emerald, per 64 emeralds you get an emerald block, per 64 emerald blocks you get a liquid emerald.
The server also requires a resourcepack; it automatically downloads when you join the server.
