The dice gods are fickle gods, and bring ruin just as easily as bounty; perhaps even moreso.

"You don't know what th- ? oh, right. Yeah, you're.. not gonna have a good time, are you?"

Something begins beeping.

"Oh, come on! Okay, let's see... evil water spirit with its sentience taken out plus chains makes mindless automation, get a better weapon than that knife, I'll get you a ride but for now I ha-"

aaand she's gone. Just there one moment, popped out the next.

In that same moment, the glint behind you vastly increases in size as whatever's causing it finally comes over the horizon. You can't make out a shape through the heat waves, but there's some kinda blob there, at least.

Is there anywhere else that we can run to? At all? Is it just desert?

 

The desert's big, but it isn't too big. If you could figure out a way to carry water and stick to a single direction, you could probably get out before you starve to death.
Or, at the very least, find someone who can.

You could hope that whatever's approaching isn't a setting-appropriate riff on jawas, though me bringing it up now reduces the chances of that significantly.

You could run in a random direction, hoping to find something relevant. The odds of that are low, but hopefully fate would shine on you.

Timeline split wouldn't work, those actions take too long... right? Time limit is a thing if I'm not wrong.
I could try to make friends with the pond, except without the uwu.
Or I'd Poof Out (tm). I'd prefer that one.

Keeping an eye out for the disappearing woman as you do so, you approach the pond and poke it.
You recieve a small bubbling of the pond in response. In a certain light, it sort of sounds like humming.

You try to hum several different tunes, just throwing together whatever sounds nice.
You don't actually know any songs ;-;
The pond matches you hum for hum for several minutes, no matter what kind of insane vocal percussion you come up with. A tenseness in the water you didn't even realize was there loosens up, turning the already relaxing mood into something almost serene.

There are still some you haven't eaten, and the pond accepts them happily. Truly, the fastest route to the heart is through the stomach.

How, exactly, would a sentient pond qualify as an active companion? Still, it likes you.

Whatever it is over the horizon has come into something resembling range, only a mile or two away. The glint is subsiding, in favor of the thing's sand wake, which is somehow visible from this far away.

It's a vaguely greyish brown blob. As it's gotten closer, increasing defintion has made the blod appear shorter and somewhat top heavy. The huge amount of distrubed sand it creates with its movement obscures most other features.

It's solidly about a mile away now, and at its current speed it'll pass here in about... 1 minute.

 

Is it the rock but bigger?
Also, what is lake-kun? lake-chan?
What is the lake doing? .-.

 

The water's calm, for the most part. Occasionally, a satisfied seeming ripple makes its way across its surface, but other than that it's pretty sedate.

As the blob becomes more and more defined, it does indeed crystalize into another massive rocky beast. This one, however, is far more sandy than molten, and it has a much different body shape.
Its body is overall shaped like a straightened out horn, with two huge arms in front digging and propelling a tapering tail. Its undersized head has no eyes, as far as you can see, just a blind jaw. On the sides of its head you can just barely make out dips before it thunders past you, shaking the entire oasis.

"Living, indeed."

 

Look back to where the horn-esque beast came from, is there a trail? That thing had to have come from somewhere.. right?

 

Yes, there's a noticable distrubance in the sand. If the wind earlier was any indication, though, the trail might only last a few days.

 

We jump up and down on the grass to make sure the oasis isn't secretly a giant turtle or something.
