    Title. I've been running around and refreshing the house for a good while now with little signs of progress. The third floor seems significant but every time I find a second staircase the room is a dead end.

    The wiki has the solution. Once you get onto the third floor, hit that button once and you should have a path on the third floor to a room that lets you drop down to the journal.

    Go into the house, press the first button twice, go up, press the upper button once, and go to the journal.
