Using them. I think it's based on taking damage with armours and jewelry, and attacking with weapons.

You can lose durability when you are AFK (that's what happened to me), so the longer you hold it the longer you'll lose durability. (It's just a guess)
Meaning that you'll lose durability depending on the time you hold/wear the items.

For equipables, I'm pretty sure it's time spent wearing them. I don't know how exactly it works for weapons, but I would imagine it involves both uses and time spent holding.

You don't lose durab for doing nothing. For weapons, casting spells and attacking degrades them, and for the rest it's damage taken and when you travel a long distance over a short period of time. Walking/running at normal speed, for example, will never damage them, but riding a horse likely will.

I feel like it shouldn’t calculate if you ride a horse, should really only apply for walk speed builds :/

makes sence that riding a noble steed would fuck up your armor but not running constantly banging your feet on the ground from 1 side of gavel to the other

I did some testing myself in game, and I lose 1-2 durability per minute of ---constant--- walking, regardless of my movement speed.
