With the new update coming out soonish and having a significant impact on items, I’ve been thinking about them quite a bit.

There’s two things I want to ask those of you who are reading this. The first thing is what is the role of having multiple item tiers, and how does each relate to another. The second is what makes an item worthy of existence, and why should or shouldn’t we have the enormous amount of items we have today? Here’s my thoughts:

Basically all items in my opinion should have a specific build they should fit into, and generally be the best choice for that HIGHLY SPECIFIC play style and build. Currently most people end up using items that are the general “meta”. These are items like third eye, memento, Taurus, Vaward, and other items that basically are always used. Once you get outside of this meta, most of the items simply go unused unless they’ve got a specific niche.

I feel all items should have some specific build that they and only they are viable for, so that no item is truly useless. Sure, some builds may be used less than others, but none fall into the “never touched by players category”.

I feel that item tiers should serve as a stepping stones up to the most powerful version (legends, or mythics if there is one for that build) of that piece. For example, I feel that there should be a piece for unique, rare and legend that all fit a SPECIFIC build and play style. As you get higher tier there should be no reason to use the unique or rare that you were using, as long as that piece is the same build and play style.. it should be stronger in all ways in my opinion.

Example: your build goes for pure damage, focusing on specific elements. The unique item tier does this, the rare does it better (no reason to use the unique) and the legend does it even better (no reason to use the rare). There would be little to no overlap for having multiple items of the same exact build and play style. This would probably result in less variety, but considering the current item meta and overall massive pool of generally unused items, is that really that bad?

Anyways, these are just my opinions on it and are most likely highly misplaced so feel free to tell me about your beliefs on the item system and maybe even change my mind.

p.s. please forgive typos, I did this on mobile at midnight

Here's my internal thought in mind.

Buff @Moss the item to mythic armor strength.

Also here are some of my thoughts displayed at a midnight format. (Wow we both post at midnight too!)

"Instate Equality In Item Strength and Power to All Items"

    "Unique power = Mythic Power"

"Why spend time finding a mythic when you can get a unique that differs a bit from the mythic but easier to get?"

"Pfff other fun content worth more than perfecting item balance to the percent? I'll go with the latter."

I understand where you’re coming from but that’s just the nature of any game with item tiers and builds. Trying to “fix” items to specific builds removes the fun of making/exploring new builds and makes the game more stale. It’s best when items are balanced as they’re needed by the devs/content team and the community decides which builds are best rather than just having the devs fix the items to a specific purpose.
