When you get an unidentified item it says that it’s magic is sealed and you must visit an identifier.

Why is it sealed? Did a person seal it? Surely they couldn’t seal every single item. What are your guys’ thoughts on this?

I've always thought of it as "You don't know what that item is or what it can do. Ask someone who knows better, who can tell you how to use those features."

As a secondary note, it's even in their name: Item identifier

I imagine that all the unidentified items are like ancient relics that have been out of use for so long they are unusable. The Identifier reinvigorates the magic within that has been lost to time using the power of emeralds, and boom. However, the reason why that stats are different each time is that this process is imperfect, resulting in the item sometimes reaching how it was back in the day(maxed stats), but most of the time paling in comparison to its true, original power.

Well since reidentifying changes the IDs I think Eric’s explanation is the best. This is just something I saw that made me curious, I love the theories and explanations.

"Oh woops, I/that other identifier made a mistake in figuring this stuff out. This is what it's actually capable of, and this is how you actually use it"

"Oh woops, dun a mistake with that again"

"Woopsie poopsie uwu owo, made a little fucky wucky for the third time"

"Okay, I have no idea what I'm doing. Just yeet that shite outta here and give me your emeralds"

I believe it would make more sense that the identifier just uses a special form of magic, and charges Emeralds. A man has to make a living! This would also explain why reIDing items costs exponentially more. It must be pretty tricky to Re-power items to begin with, but to bring about something different? A truly masterful skin that most people take for granted.
Also, I doubt Emeralds have much more magical power than "Shiny stone oooo"
