Our boy Toby Fox released a game, which I thought was a demo of his upcoming "undertale 2"
Turns out the game is really long and I haven't finished it yet, and it's free!

It's really fucking good and if you enjoyed Undertale then this is a pure gem

You sure this is safe? Because my computer is freaking out about it.

 

I finished it earlier, but yeah it's safe. Your computer is freaking out because it's a random .exe file (which are known to contain viruses, it's not the case here)
So, it's actually a complete game and not a demo. Looks like it's gonna be an episodic game, I expect the future chapters to NOT be free.

Either way, it was amazing! Highly recommend it, the undertale humor is definitely there and even better (maybe because I got way better at english...)!

 

So is it a direct sequel to UnderTale then? Like what’s the premise?

 

Let's just say it's set in an alternate universe... We can't say for sure right now, but it seems to be a sequel to Undertale and an alternate universe as well.
I don't know how to explain it, the timeline just went batshit crazy. I'd say just play it because anything I say could become a spoiler, just think of it as an alternate universe!

 

Ok, I mean that kinda makes sense since there were so many different endings.

Anyways, we still have old characters (with new ones) and they're on the surface. So yeah, that's all I can say about Deltarune, which, funnily enough, is an anagram of Undertale

Ok I just did, and I see what you mean by now it being an alternate reality. I'll try not to spoil much, but I'm really confused because I think I got the bad ending, even though I tried not to kill anyone and I think might have accidently killed 1 guy.

 

basically cave story's good ending when you dont know there is a better ending than escaping the island with the rest of the gang

 

I assumed it was nothing elaborate given it was just a demo and all.

 

Looks like this is the ending everyone got. I also went pacifist and surely got the same. I tried going genocide, but you just can't actually kill anything, they just flee and come back.

Spoiler: THEORY TIME

First off, about the timeline and where the story is set:
At the end of the genocide ending, Chara says "Let's erase this pointless world and move on to the next". I assume that's exactly what they did! They somehow possessed Kris at the end of the chapter one. Which is kinda weird, but we'll definitely learn more in the upcoming chapters.

About this "Dark World"... I noticed everything about it was different from the surface. The GUI looks different, Kris and Susie look different in this world for some reasons, they randomly got weapons, even Susie points out "Wow, how did I get this axe?". What's super interesting is that the GUI on the surface is the classic undertale one, and in the Dark World it's that super fancy one. It seems to cater towards the "it's all a dream" thing even though I don't think it is, it might be something entirely different. The Dark World and the surface seem to be two entirely separate worlds. Other timelines maybe? We're definitely talking to Gaster (the super mysterious undertale character) upon starting the game, and he was the one "scattered across time and space", so that may be why multiple timelines are involved.

I don't really have a theory about the grand scheme of things... We'll have to wait.

Here's a post on reddit I found super interesting:
The implication is that you took over Kris's body. You overwrote their save file, and lots of people comment on how Kris is acting strangely during the epilogue.
The immediate reaction upon seeing Kris pull out the knife and get that red glint in their eyes is "oh shit it's Chara" but in reality that's just Kris getting real pissed off that you possessed them. That's my take on it right now. Chapter 2 might shed some light on the matter.

Huh, that’s kinda weird. Asriel in the dark world literally says that killing people or not will change the ending. Which I think is bit too much on the nose, because part of the charm of the previous game was how it subverted expectations with fighting enemies.

Anyway, was it just me or did the whole story have an uncanny resemblance to Alice in Wonderland? Falling down a mysterious hole, fighting a card-themed kingdom and monarch, characters from the real world appear as different ones in the imaginery world, implying that it was just a dream/imaginary in the end?

Also, I’m glad they got rid of random encounters, and that you can take damage in real time now and there are obstacles and projectiles in the environment. The new battle system is also a step up from b4. I just hope they add more unique ways to act.

 

Ooooh I never noticed the similarities with Alice! That's kinda cool. I wonder if it's just a coincidence?
And yeah, the game feels and plays significantly better than Undertale. The fact that you can sprint is really nice too.
The "it's all a dream" theory is definitely possible, and Susie points it out when they "wake up" from the dark world. But that'd be a weird ass dream if both experienced some multiplayer dream!

I checked about the possible genocide, but apparently others have had the same "problem" as me: mobs flee, you can't actually kill anything, they don't turn to dust.
About the comment I put in a spoiler earlier, I found a similar one that's also interesting:

Why is no one paying attention the the fact that when you Save for the first time in game you Save over Kris's file? the first time the screen popped up I flip flopped back and forth on Saving (considering the place it had in the original game) but eventually decided to as i got close to the castle, and on saving i noticed immediately that the file isnt Kris's anymore, it uses the name you give as yours when building the "vessel" at the beginning.

Does anyone else get a feeling like [[SPOILERS]] especially considering the fact that you can WASD the SOUL that Kris tears out of their chest, is the SOUL just us stealing control of the body? whats goin on here Toby, I caught you in the computer lab in the Library, I know theres heartbreakingly more to this one >:|

An answer to that:

Coupled with the fact that some characters straight up say "youve been acting different lately" tells me that you are controlling kris now and that they dont have a choice. Having options like mentioning aplys to undyne when theyve never met and kris would probably know this, or with sans with toriel or themself. Its YOUR choice, not kris's.

 

Yeah, it’s probably a coincidence. It’s mostly the card theme that really does it. It might not technically be a dream, maybe more so along the lines of their imaginations being too overactive. I wouldn’t be surprised if they just played pretend so they wouldn’t have to go back to class :3

I guess the question is why are we then controlling a kid in a town full of monsters from another reality?
