The item naming contest was happening while I was in my Grade 10 science class, and we talked about the Albedo Effect, which is related to how much heat a surface absorbs based on its colour and how much of the spectrum that colour reflects. This is the reason the ocean absorbs more heat than the north and south poles; they're a darker colour.

just want to point out that fermion and lepton arent particles in themselves, but names for groups of subatomic particles (an electron is a lepton etc)
This clears it up a bit (warning, physics incoming)
and yes they have uses - such as our neutrino detectors which (hopefully) might be able to find stars/black holes in places we normally cant see
also neutrinos give a cool thing called Cherenkov radiation because they dont slow dont muh in water creating a sort-of sonic boom but for the speed of light

 

Quick summary for those too lazy to read the link :P - fermions include both quarks (which make up protons and neutrons), as well as leptons (electrons, neutrinos, and their exotic cousins). Those aren't the exact definitions of the particles, but what the groups contain - the definitions have to do with the charge and spin of the particles, and the way they behave. Fermions can be thought of as particles that are things, while their counterpart bosons can be thought of as particles that do things (e.g. carry forces).
