but when i heard about it last year when some police officers came to school to talk about bullying and mentioned that game that caused that i was like "why do you guys even bother saving these braindead idiots..."
the challenge basically tells you to do stuff like:

I guess it just goes to show that you can’t always protect people from their own stupidity.

 

If god was there even at the beginning then humanity wouldn't exist.

Next one, let's guess what the next stupid thing is.

-Jump off a cliff and survive chalenge (Lots of legs gonna break)
-Put a bomb in a box in front of you and survive (It seems SOMEWHAT sensible, at least compared to the previous ones)
-The mafia chalenge (Go to the bottom of a body of water with cement shoes)
-Go on an assembly line and survive (uh oh this would be nasty)
-I can fly chalenge (make a homemade flying machine, jump off a cliff, try to survive)
-BREAK THE LAW CHALENGE (Ok this is just stupid)

There should be a "Dont set youself on fire or eat poisonous materials" law.
I have kind of a weak stomach, and stuff like this... well I feel like vomiting afterwards.

 

I know how to fix this! We make a challenge for people to go as longas possible without intentionally harming themselves for a challenge.

According to the article, the 'challenge' dates back four years. This probably means the earliest recording of this challenge is four years old. It doesn't mean this has been popular for an entire four years.
Now, a medium has made an article about it. That probably means less people will attempt the challenge, since they've seen the damage it can cause. If this had happened much longer ago, it would've meant this article in particular probably didn't exist. That means it took a really long time for a big accident like this to happen, which means that either the risk is low, or few people are attempting it. I'm guessing the latter is true.
There's also the general fact that the media exaggerate. I don't think I need to explain that point.
According to this official UK report, there were 3,306 non-fatal casualties in the UK in one year. So by all standards, this one incident doesn't (or rather, shouldn't) stand out.
Personally I must say this is the first time I've heard of this 'challenge'. As for other challenges (e.g. the tide pod one and choking one): I know not one person who's ever attempted those.
Furthermore, these 'challenges' aren't anything new. In the 18th century, people (adults, mind you) literally put lead on their face for fashion. They knew fully well that lead was deadly in high amounts. People being dumb isn't anything modern.

Chill out, guys.

 

As with the Tide Pod challenge, the extra publicity might make more people attempt it now that they know about it.

That's a different challenge completely. Tide Pods look delicious, and the consumption of tide pods became a huge meme, whereas setting yourself on fire did not. Tide pods are also a really recent thing: the Tide company introduced them in 2012. Fire is (needless to say) thousands of years older than that, and many are familiar with the dangers of fire, but not with eating Tide Pods.

Seriously though, from eating cinnamon to getting trapped in duct tape and now burning yourself? There's something called "common sense" which apparently isn't very common these days...

 

Well at least it can’t get any worse beyond suicide or setting yourself on fire.

It’s more so the fact that anybody is sane enough to do this than it being that big of a threat to everyone. I literally don’t know how much worse you could get with this stuff.

Nah, that’s not good enough. Let’s have one where you swallow a handful of tide pods, pour gasoline on yourself, set yourself on fire, and then fight the bear naked all while blindfolded.
