In the News What Happens When Adults Try To Meme

Gather around kiddos, this is a true story that happened in my high school in April.

Every year, my school has a speech or presentation before Prom week about drunk driving, drugs, sex, you know, teenager stuff. So this year’s presentation was given by a family who lost their daughter to drinking during her first week at college (hence the presentation was called Rachel’s First Week). They show a serious slideshow, and talk for a bit about drinking like in any normal presentation. But then the mood started to turn. I guess to be more “hip” with the younger crowd, they let people answer quiz questions on a slideshow using their phones. It seemed to be fine, until they showed the first question; “Who would you rather date: Trump, Kayne, Beyoncé, or Mr. T?” They then had some other questions like, “What percentage of high schoolers drink?,” but they kept sneaking in a goofy question every other one.

Although people were starting to get a bit rowdy and the humor was cheesy, I figured it couldn’t get that bad. But when the speakers let everyone type in answers to the slideshow, I turned to my friend and said, “Oh god...”

As you can imagine a bunch of high schoolers, the chat degraded into spam of “Fortnite da best!” or “Where’s Despacito 2?!” It got the point where some dipshit typed his number and asked one of the speakers for her number. And then the speaker sent a photo of her hand with a wedding ring on.

So the administrators ended the presentation and the next day my teachers were telling us how embarrassed they were. While I do feel a bit bad for the family, I don’t understand how they thought memeing like that would not contradict the tone of a drinking PSA, or that letting high schoolers anonymously type in the chat was a good idea. Sure it’s a shitty thing for your child to burn down your house, but why did you give them matches and gasoline in the first place?

 

Any platform that allows anyone regardless of age group, especially people in teens to young adults to anonymously type responses, answers or any type of feedback will turn into a shitshow. In one of my animation classes a couple of years ago, the teacher was using this presentation website since powerpoint was acting strangely on her computer, as programs on teacher computers do. Anyway this website also had an anonymous chat feature on the side of the powerpoint which I can assume is supposed to be used for people that are watching from different locations. Regardless, the chat flooded mas fast as a class of ~25 predominately male highschoolers can make it out to be. Regardless, the presentation was postponed to the next day when powerpoint started working again.

Just another example how anonymous text channels are curses onto any school system.

Seriosly you shouldn’t be annoyed by this, they’re high schoolers!
Of course all memes they have are dry and overused.
Of course it was wrong for the quiz to be made like that, but if the high schoolers had actually been serious and answered the questions (like they should have), this situation wouldn’t have happened.

 

Well it was back in April. I guess I wasn’t that annoyed, but I could’ve done without the experience, you know? While that is true, you can’t expect high schoolers (even college students) to be serious, especially when they can’t get caught.
