Cancer: Should We Change Its Name?

Ever since Gavel came out, the "zodiac" legendaries have been talked about, and one of the most talked about is Cancer, the poison+attack tier helmet.




Originally used for poison, it was then utilized for attack tier abuse with Taurus until Taurus got nerfed, though you still see it nowadays in both sorts of builds.

Now, the issue that comes up with this item should be fairly obvious. Despite the other Zodiac items being generally themed either after their name or after aspects of their actual zodiac lore...Cancer was themed not after the crab, but after the disease. We recently received complaints about some item names such as Cardiac Arrest and Asphyxia, due to them being related to disease, and this has rekindled the controversy over Cancer's name somewhat in the community.

However, this doesn't mean the community has been silent about it up until now. I've received tons of messages about
"How could you possible think naming an item Cancer was a good idea, you wynn fucks are sick!"
"dude, shit item, cancer"
And such. The moderation team has also received messages, and this has been a consistent thing since Gavel came out.

While the design of the item shouldn't be changed due to its alignment with the community's crosshairs, something should be done about it, so the question of the day is:

Should we change Cancer's name and lore?

Vote in the poll above. We'll take action in a week depending on the response. Mind that, if we do change Cancer's name, there may be a new Cancer helmet coming out to replace the lost zodiac symbol and things will be shuffled around a bit in terms of obtaining the current Cancer depending on the votes.

My only question is if Cancer is changed, what would the new helmet be like? Or is that something not even thought about yet

 

In my opinion it could be either Water, or Water earth (most likely not water earth due to pisces being one)

but keep in mind cancer has a symbol for a crab

 

For context, if the name of the current Cancer is changed, no one will lose the item, and the new renamed Cancer item will have different stats. No stats on existing Cancer will be changed either, and it will remain obtainable, so this is purely a visual change.

I remember this one thread when Gavel came out, it was made by this one person who knew a lot about zodiac signs. They were disappointed about how the zodiac items were handled in relation to the zodiac symbols, and they seemed especially disappointed about Cancer.

Honestly, I'm all for the change. My only worry is that this will confuse people a lot since the item is so well known. I wouldn't be surprised if people would accidentally still call it Cancer out of habit.

jokes aside, I don't think it was ever ment to be an sick joke of some sort but I don't know if its still respectful to use the names of real life disease. personally I don't realy care, but the lore fits the name and you shouldn't change it that completely if the name is changed.

 

I'll vote yes for two reasons:

1. My starsign is Cancer and I want a helmet which shows my traits, darnit
2. It sounds really bloody awkward in chat to say 'buying cancer' or anything like that
3. Most other zodiac items follow their sign so the inconsistency is a bit awkward
4. New item, so why not?

I feel like most of the "no" votes came from people who haven't even read the part where we're getting a new "Cancer" that's more faithful to the zodiac.

 

I'm personally not offended by this and usually I think people are just being oversensitive. But because cancer is a serious disease that takes lots of innocent lives, I could see people who have cancer or know someone who has cancer get offended by this.

So I think you should change its name, maybe you could call it something along the lines of venom or you could make up a disease that is a thing in the world of wynn.

 

I don’t feel that strongly about it either way. After all, the stats aren’t being changed, and the item lores for Gavel are practically noncanon since they almost never get used. I guess it would be fitting to change its lore to be more appropriate for its name, but to change both its lore and name is a bit much. Changing it because it references a disease? Come on, that’s being a bit over-reactionary. Wynncraft is a game full of undead zombies and horrific creatures, and this is what people are getting hung up over (only if they wanted to change it for that reason)?

But if changing it means we get a new water item, I guess I’ll be down. I don’t feel a strong need for a new water item, but there is no reason not to, especially if others really want it.

Though the question is what type of item would the new one be?

 

Dont do it , Its a zodiac sign. the little kids here need to shush and accept. the people that say u should change are the people who laugh when the teacher sais penis.

 

Except that the item doesn't even fit with the zodiac sign (which it was inspired by, not the disease) at all.

but heres a question/suggestion, a sugquestion:
can you change the theme of cancer without changing the ids and shit? so you change the lore so it looks like some kinda poisonous crab instead of the disease

are there any diseases that only take non innocent lives?

 

Change the lore, something like a highly venomous crab race that was doomed to extinction due to venom milking.

 

Although I wouldn’t mind a change, I don’t believe that it should happen just because some random people are offended by its name (though in this case it’s not just that, it’s also cuz of theming and stuff).

Same goes for items like Asphyxia and Cardiac Arrest. Who cares if a few people get offended? It’s not like they were made just to be offensive. I don’t even understand how people could get offended by them. The people complaining about these names should be completely disregarded and the item team should continue making great items like those. They’re very interesting and have cool names and I hope to see more like them.
