Honestly I don't like that unidentified item stuff either, however that merchant wants two fire boss drops and one item that you can buy from the normal fire armor/accessory merchant. Those exchange merchants are there so people can change between hive items, but not to get them "for free".

In another cave around there, next to the path that leads to the fighting floors.

There are also signs. It is directly to the left of the winding staircase, whereas the exchange merchants are further to the left. Also, you need a voucher for each merchant in order to buy from them. You get vouchers from doing "The Qira Hive" quest. Each one corresponds to a different merchant. You get 1 voucher for each merchant by completing the quest, and another special 'master' voucher that gives you access to a single more powerful item. The unidentified item thing throws a lot of people off, but that is actually the corresponding item from the merchant. If you don't like the item you purchased, you can exchange it with the item you originally purchased, for a different one.
