Why Do People Hate Sword Art Online?

I just watched MatPat’s most recent video and he said SAO is one of the most famous and infamous animes. Personally, I have no interest in anime and I get why people are turned off by it’s weird shit sometimes, but what’s so bad about SAO in particular? It sounds like some of its fans hate it for some reason.

Because they waste a good premise, like all shows about "you die in game you die in real life" do. Instead of exploring the world or doing literally anything interesting at all the show just follows around Angsty McEmo, who is an absurdly boring character who is overpowered to the point where any possible conflict feels fake. Hell, the one time he loses, the show makes it clear that it's because his opponent cheated. He's like Superman: just awful.

basically the only reason it's popular is because of the setting and the intrigue it had back in 2014, while the story (especially later on oh god), characters, and just about everything is terrible

now SAO abridged, there's a good show

 

Wasn’t there a botched arc with an elvin girl or something too? What’s so different about the abridged?

the second arc is basically just even worse characters, even worse story, and absolutely no intrigue. Not to mention that the main character is still so overpowered that he can literally break the rules of the game for no apparent reason. It's like a sequel that's 100% rides off of the success of the original. also the elf girl is his sister who becomes part of his harem which is just bad on several levels

the abridged is basically a fan parody that has

1. good writing
2. actual humour
3. actual intrigue
4. a real conclusion
5. a main character isnt anime superman and actually has flaws (and lots)

Sounds interesting... I've always been hesitant to get into Anime. Not because I just arbitrarily hate it for being "culturally" different, but sometimes it just gets too... how should I phrase this? So absolute bat-shit crazy that I don't know what's going on. I know it depends on the Anime, and I'm genuinely interested in Cory in the House, Avatar, Persona 5, and One Punch Man, but some moments just make me feel... ugh...

Ok, don't get your knobs in a twist. I know that Avatar is a Western cartoon inspired by Anime, but isn't Anime. But you know what, idc. It's still a good show (except for that god awful movie) and it basically feels like an Anime without the weird, kinky shit.

Yeah, I'm just kinda torn on it. I can see people being turned off from say Rick and Morty for similar reasons. Like how the premise is weird and the jokes are crude, but those are also some of the reasons that make it interesting and joyful for others. I guess I'm just really turned off when it gets to weird, sexual stuff that pops out of nowhere that borders on pedophila. Or when they fight large hentai monsters...

Maybe I'll finally give it a try. I've just been watching YouTube for the past few years.

more americanized than most other shows, and isn't that crazy. At least it's crazy stuff still exists in the real world
