I wonder if there's anything else visible, there are some ruins near the Corrupted Village that are now accessible to discovery.

I have no clue as to what that realm Skylaar was living in is. What I do believe it is just a storage space/world/realm/dimension that was overtaken by the Realm of Shadow, and Skylaar had gone to this place before and extracted that vial of darkness.
