This is actually a fun story: So I started with a picture I took in high school of an oxen. I kept distorting it and warping the design. I was originally going to do a frame animation with some basic tweening to get an abstract effect. Because I wasn't satisfied with that outcome when I got there, I kept going. I started playing around with the bump map, grid and overall angles in Photoshop's 3d workshop (this was all done in Photoshop) where I sculpted concepts inspired by the James Cameron film "Avatar".

Then came the actual illustration part. All of the lighting (shadows, midtones, highlights) were done with a special brush I made from scratch... it's a very grunge design but comes out really nicely, especially with black. I then went into using soft brushes and a few masks on individual layers of the image to blend together the 3d sculpting with the illustration portion.

The main thing is the watercolor - I did that with a lot of brush-play and experimentation, which was blended into the rest. It took about 40-50 minutes of just sheer fun. Playing around, experimenting... that's what art is about to me. Challenging yourself with new things and making "mistakes" into what you consider to be enchanting. Goes to show how ideas change!

That sounds like a lot of fun, I never really thought of art like that. It made quite a cool drawing too!
