Yeah but PEMDAS is rather vague. Traditionally the answer would be divide 2, but the way it's written is very unspecific.

Brackets/parenthesis (or whatever u nerds call em) is the same as *, if it was (2*3) it would be completely different.

BIMDAS/BODMAS/PEMDAS is what most people used in primary school. Im pretty sure most people can remember the order but thats what people learnt when they were educated about this stuff

 

The 2(3) is interesting I changed my vote to 58 after I realized that 2(3)=2*3=/=(2*3)

 

It doesn't work like that, as the 2 in 2(3) is counted as part of the bracket

2(3) gives the same result as 2*3, but isn't the same for reasons I can not explain.
However, you need to foil in the same step you do brackets in, which means the answer is 10

It is multiplication, but a different kind of multiplication. This could be rewritten as if it were 2(1+2). When it's written in this way, it's more clear that you need to follow a rule called "foil" where you distribute the 2 on the outside to the terms on the inside, so you would do ((2)(1)+(2)(2))=2+4=6, then you carry on from there. The difference between parentheses and multiplication is that anything in the area of the parentheses which would look like this [x(y+z)a]. In this case, x,y,z and a are all part of the parentheses step.

 

So you are telling me 2(3)=(2*3)?
Because that ain't true, you calculate everything in the parenthesis first but the two only multiplies what's in the parenthesis. It should be written 2*(3) as if you don't write a action before a parenthesis it should be considered a multiplication.

 

The answer isn't 10. It's 58. I'm engineer, I used advanced calculator, WA and engineering programs such as mathlab to solve this problem. Not that I needed to, but I had to confirm the result from several different sources, otherwise I'd be asked for "proof". It's 58.
