If you're an avid Minecraft player, you've probably seen some videos or at least heard something about a possible end of the PC Edition of Minecraft caused by a lack of updates.

As someone who's enjoyed Minecraft for years now, I wanted to voice my thoughts on the issue to a community that I've also been a member of for years.

I remember in the older versions of Minecraft, during the Beta, the game was mainly populated by teenagers and adults. It was typically a very mature audience from my experience and I mostly played with people who were multiple years older than me. It wasn't really popular with younger kids until it got bigger and more mainstream. Now the game probably has the largest audience of children especially now that they are expanding into education, merchandise, etc. The game is becoming more and more accessible to younger kids through the addition of Realms (now you don't have to know how to set up a server and portforward to play with friends), and DLC on the XBOX and Pocket Edition.

Obviously with this new content being available for purchase, minecraft players will either have to learn how to properly use the huge amount of tools available to them in the PC edition or just pay for it on the other editions. Those who are less capable will migrate to the PC editions and those who are smarter, faster learners, or crave more from the game will stick with the PC edition. The final result of this will probably end up much like how the game started, with a mature audience being left on PC. Over time, that audience will eventually move on to better things and the community dwindles down to nothing.

I personally kind of hope the game takes this path. It's almost poetic how I've seen both sides of the game, starting out Minecraft as a child and playing with a mature community, and now growing up, becoming more mature, and seeing its (hopefully) peaceful end.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter since this is a topic that really interests me. Please keep discussions civil. Love ya <3

He is referring to the new cross-platform version of the game.

I honestly don't think the community is going anywhere. Older players of the game have found their niches like build teams, content creators, or server managers. By expanding the playerbase to a younger audience and allowing cross-platform play, the community will get larger. The older players are not going anywhere, but the crowd around them is getting bigger. Like all games people will move on, but the regular player base on Hypixel alone is bigger than most games on steam. Having played since Classic, I've seen groups of players form clans (you can find ones from the beta on the minecraft forums) and many older servers have survived.

If the younger players turn out to be woke, we'll probably see something similar to when Bethesda teamed up with Valve to get people to pay for Skyrim mods. I doubt this would happen though. Worst case scenario, Mojang would stop supporting Java edition in which case the older players would probably set up emulators.

Just because we don't see that many people playing the other versions doesn't mean it's not being played. If you take a few moments to look, you'll find tons of big XBOX minecraft Youtubers. It's a community as large as the PC version it seems. If you're interested, here's an article from Mojang that shows how many copies of Minecraft have been sold. Keep in mind that the article is from 2016 so things could have changed and copies sold does not equal the number of active players, but it does give us some sort of realistic ballpark to see what versions people are playing.

I have four big problems with Mojang moving away from Minecraft Java Edition.

    1. Their very aggressive promotion of Windows 10 is awful. Windows 10 has some benefits, but you're acting like its too hard to add the feature for addons to the Java Edition. Windows 10 Edition isnt even WRITTEN IN JAVA, yet the addons use JSON files, a file used in Java. It wouldnt be hard to add Java addon support.

    2. (this one is more of me ranting)
Why MINEPLEX, of all servers? You ha the choice to add ANY BIG SERVER to Minecraft, and you add MINEPLEX? I swear, Mojang SEES that their game is riddled with kids nowadays. Instead of taking Hypixel, a quality server, or Wynncraft, they choose Mineplex.

    3. Minecraft's older, more mature players are already dwindling. We have a few safe havens like Wynncraft left, and Wynncraft is a Java edition server. If they're going to leave out the Java edition for this update, the kids who play PE and Xboz will completely take over.

    4. Thanks to minecraft coins, minecraft is now roblox. good job mojang. *slow clap*

actually PE has a larger community than the pc version iirc and the console communities are actually really big

honestly the PC version has the smallest community.

anyway my main issue with this update is the Minecraft store. I feel like this is going to turn out very very badly

Summary of meeting at Mojang HQ

Bill Gates: Right, so you guys have made one of the most successful video games ever. Yet why do I feel so empty inside?

Jeb: You're not making enough money, sir.

Bill Gates: Damn right I'm not. That Amazon guy's about to overtake me as richest man in the world, and I control Minecraft. Minecraft!? Does that mean nothing? Right - how are we making money? Let's start with the Java edition.

Jeb: Well we sell people copies of the game, sir.

    Bill Gates: And then what?

Jeb: Well, they play it. And some of them make really awesome stuff on servers and players-

Bill Gates: How is this making me money!?

Jeb: It isn't, sir. Not directly.

Bill Gates: Then stop doing it. Charge them for everything! I want to see DLC. I want to see microtransactions. I want to see kids stealing mummy's credit card and-

Jeb: Actually out game is aimed at a more mature audience. And we can't do all of that, sir - the fans - they'd - ... uh, you'd lose a lot of money. Sir.

Bill Gates: MATURE AUDIENCE!? You're trying to direct this at people with financial skills? Give me your update schedule- ... ... there. 1.11, you're adding a mob that spits on you to attack you. The 5-year-olds will love it! 1.12, you're adding - COLOUR! Your dull colour scheme isn't enough to grab a child's limited attention. Everything must be way too bright! Add concrete! Not even a texture to distract you from the beautiful colour. Ah... money from kids.

Jeb: Uhh... as you wish.... sir?

Bill Gates: Anyway, this is just short-term. Longer term, we're going to have to find ways to charge people for way more. We can't have them steal Mummy's credit card and just buy a 20$ game, can we?

    Jeb: So, the other versions-

Bill Gates: This is too complicated for me, make it one other. That way we can save money on developing them all separately. What were you saying?

    Jeb: We've got microtransactions there.

Bill Gates: We DO? This is great. Forget about that Java nonsense, that's not profitable enough. Change it to a marketplace system, we want it to be harder for people to see how much they're spending. Get people who are very slightly creative to help. We wouldn't want people like that High Pick Sell thing on there, they do too much that we can't claim credit for. That Mineplex bunch already seem to be hitting our target audience, why not them? And I want to plague those Java scum. Drown them in EULA changes while keeping them vague enough that we can just ban whoever we like. Make it a 'community edition'. That can die with those sensible players, leaving behind a dystopian wasteland of angry 8-year-olds spending their parents money on things they could have had for free!

    Jeb: Oh dear lord...

The Pocket Edition was actuallie the first version I ever played, but I still find it sad that it has now become more popular than the original PC edition and also that Minecraft itself has sold itself out to little kids basicallie

Minecraft in general has just changed too much for me, it's no longer a simple little game where I can go exploring and get rekt by monsters, instead it's full of so much more stuff and changes that were never there before and seems more targeted towards younger children as mentioned, and it no longer feels like the same game I used to love

Everything went downhill as soon as Mojang was purchased by Microsoft, at least for me

THANK YOU. Someone understands how I feel about the game.

Minecraft PE was the first version I played (since my parents didnt want to buy stuff off of a website) so I first played that version. At the time, the Pocket Edition was at about version 0.2.0 or 0.3.0. It was simple, easy to learn and fun.

I buy PC edition. Once again, simple, easy, fun, many other mature players.
    Fast forward to today:
The ORIGINAL VERSION OF THE GAME is being scrapped for kiddie versions, and servers like Mineplex are taking over.

I'm fine with Minecraft being directed at kids as long as the fanbase doesn't become cancer like roblox, but it goes TOO FAR when the original version that Notch himself created is being scrapped for an awful Pocket Edition port that requires windows 10, which, at the time, is severely broken because of the Creators Update. That's like you buying a company just to destroy competition.

Can we stop making this a Mineplex hate/Wynncraft admiration thread? It's childish and not even remotely related to what this thread is about. I realize that servers like Mineplex are being promoted by Mojang now, but it's completely besides the point. Mineplex is your average minigame server with some pretty well-made games and there's no disputing that. If any other server was in the position Mineplex is in, you wouldn't even care. If you want to talk about Mineplex go to your own profile and rant all you want.

    2. Well made minigames?
They have a copy of build battle and cops n crims,
Some of their maps are pretty dated,
And maybe 4 or so are dead

Please list some of the well made games

Do you REALLY think Mineplex has QUALITY minigames? Honestly, every game on Mineplex has been created before, 99% of the time it's 10x better than the Mineplex version.

Oh, and if you want the age of people who actually spend lots of time on Mineplex, this is a picture of the staff team at Mineplex taken at Minecon 2015 in London.
