Wynnic Isn't Just A Code!

Here is Rikter's lore:
Named for an ancient Wynnic word for "Earthquake", this mighty battle hammer causes the very bones of struck enemies to rattle and heave as though the earth itself was splitting under their feet.
This means Wynnic wasn't just a code, it was a legitimate language with it's own words.

Well maybe Wynnic is still a cipher, but the letters are pronounced differently, making different words.
Because there are still giant letters in that stone. This means that in their ancient language, that might read something that sounds completely different from "the realm of light" but still means the same thing. the Heliolux could just be speaking English/Common/whatever for the sake of making things understandable to us. Wynnic conveniently being a cipher may just be because of language evolution/fourth wall-breaking convenience.

 

Or it could be that English in Wynn is just an evolved form of the ancient Wynnic language. Some words, for legendy stuff that doesn't change, have remained the same, but the language and the alphabet have completely changed. Although it doesn't explain how French entered Hamsey's vocabulary somewhere between Ragni and the Sky Islands... ...maybe ancient Wynnic is a bit like French and Hamsey if spewing Wynn's equivalent of Shakespearian English?

 

Maybe Hamsey already spoke with a French accent in Ragni, but we had no idea. ;D

Wynnic is probably just like "the common tongue of westeros", just the way fantasy characters refer to English.

• Chef Hamsey: A pie? Why, you must have been helped by Frank. He always has a thing for making pie
• Chef Hamsey: I can see that your compétences culinaires are almost at par with mine!
• Chef Hamsey: Though I will not truly call you a chef quite yet, you are très bien! Have this reward as congratulations!

Looking closely at how Hamsey uses French, we can further analyse its role. Notice that he in general uses more French at the beginning of dialogues, and when he's being dramatic. Also, you may notice that even though he uses it randomly, there are some grammatical errors in the French, for example, using the singular 'le' for the plural 'sky islands'. Additionally, looking at the end of the quest, he uses it more when he is less impressed - the best outcome only has two French words in it.

From this we can deduce that, since Hamsey runs a fairly fancy establishment compared to what he had in Ragni, French is a language for the upper classes, possibly as an older language. Hamsey doesn't speak French very well, but he weaves it into his speech in order to sound cultured. It also helps that a lot of names in Gavel could easily be French. Perhaps French is the older language of the Villagers, which has been replaced by English among the lower classes after contact with Wynn. It certainly seems likely, as we don't meet that many upper class Gavellians, and they probably know to speak English to a Wynnian anyway. Hamsey is just trying to sound posh.
