"Don't apologize. You clearly aren't used to the way things are here."

 

"So what are the current plans?" Artemis asks.

 

"I got the information out of him. He's was useless alive so I did him a favor."

 

"They're unclear. I'm not too sure how we're going to go about this."

"And?"

 

"His name was Yrvass, a half-dragon. His parents were a dragon and a kitsune..." I stop
"He was also your grandmother's son, and so he was also your father..."

 

"What's the main goal, then?" Artemis asks.

 

"What? But... I killed my father! I watched him burn with mother, and danced on their ashes!" Anne protests.

"Frankly, I'm not sure."

 

"Well...I would think getting whatever magic or technology stops the Ruin would be the main goal. If we can reverse-engineer it, we may be able to cure the Ruin." Artemis says.

 

"Reverse what?"

 

"Reverse-Engineer. Put simply, it's the act of re-creating something based off of an already existing item." Artemis explains.

 

"How would you do that?"

 

"Well, I happen to know a few people who know some skilled engineers. If we can recover whatever is stopping the Ruin, we can reverse-engineer it and make more, and hopefully cure the Ruin entirely from your world." Artemis says.

 

"But how would we fuel them?" The Matriarch asks.

 

"What does it use for fuel?" Artemis asks.

 

"The souls of the royal family."

 

"Are they dead?" Artemis asks, "Or is it a matter of presence?"

 

"According to the report, it essentially slow burns them alive, and it lasts a few years per kid."

 

I approach the pile, takin a better look at it to see if there's any whole bodies.

 

"Oh my god, that's horrific!" Artemis says, shocked.

 

Very few whole bodies. Those that are are cut up pretty badly.

"Well, it keeps the ruin out, so that's what they do." The Matriarch shrugs.
