Maybe you should ask your teacher if you can very slightly change the question: are athletes beneficial to the country in any way? It makes it so much easier

This is for the argument that athletes are good (even tho I hate sports)

1) Important icons of communities
- Sports teams, or individual athletes, are representatives. They could represent a country (Olympics) or just a city (football or something).
- Representatives in competitions are important in bringing together a coherent community, so that people find solace in supporting the same thing as their neighbors for a fairly innocent cause
- Maybe you could cite the expansion of common culture in the 1920s when popular icons were spreading across America. It helped greatly in uniting the nation under a common cause (albeit a seemingly superficial one).

2) Athletes generate income
- During Super Bowl season, almost HALF THE ENTIRE COUNTRY watches the game.
- Obviously, this generates huge revenue for the entertainment industries associated with the Super Bowl, not to mention advertisements, commercials, ticketing, merchandising...
- Doesn't it make sense that some of the money flows back to the people who can make all of this something to actually watch, the players?
