Magic Mimic and Theory G Data File
    2016-12-18_13.10.44.png
    Health: 6600
Attack Power: 2 and 1/2 hearts with Level 83 sequencer helmet, level 82 dragon hide plate chest-piece, level 69 crystal leggings, and level 84 Ensa's ideals boots
Spawning Location: Located around the entirety of Gavel, but the specimen above was found near x 240, y 80, z -4995.
This peculiar mob is the magic mimic.
Located in the canyon of the lost, these creatures hide in suspicious crates which contain a few emerald blocks, as shown below.
    2016-12-21_12.52.55.png
When the crate is opened aka shot with arrows, beat up, etc, there is a 50 percent chance that a mimic will pop out and attempt to beat you to death.
One can say it is like a jack in the box, except for the fact that it tries to kill you.
On a more personal note, i truly do love enemies like this, ones who punish those who put greed before caution.
Some other enemies in video games that do something similar are the infamous like likes in the Legend of Zelda and the mimics of Dark Souls.
However, i noticed something else when studying this mob, and it brings up some unique questions.
    Theory G
Near each of the suspicious crates, i discovered canyon bandits that seem to defend the suspicious crates.
Now at first, this does not seem worth mentioning, as bandits would likely defend the crates which hold a good deal of loot.
But here is where it gets interesting.
Are the canyon bandits aware of the magic mimics, or are they taking advantage of the bandits to kill them later?
If it is the latter, perhaps the bandits should be quite cautious around their crates, unless their greed ends their lives!

Suspicious crates appear all over Gavel, not just the CotL, to my knowledge. I saw one in Llevigar and one in the Sky Islands once.

Sorry to break it to you but

As Shanaro said, you can find them all over Gavel. They're the same level as the corresponding area they're residing in. In Llevigar Plains they're level 40.

Great to see you're back nevertheless! :D

Another thing to note is that when you come upon Suspicious Crates, they have a 50/50 chance of either dropping however many Emerald Blocks depending on the area level or turning into a Magic Mimic.

They can spawn anywhere in Gavel, their level will change to be the same level as the area they're in. They range from level 40 crates in Llevigar to level 100 ones in Ahmsord. Higher level ones drop more EB... I believe the ones in Ahmsord can drop eight EB.

The Suspicious Crates appear in all areas of Gavel (from Llevigar to Ahmsord) and have varying levels depending on their location. As for the mimics, they spawn 5-10 levels above the crate level, and have elemental defense in all elements for all levels.

The emerald amount varies depending on the level, though this doesn't matter if you're only talking about the Mimic. They can also appear anywhere they want (similar to Key Guardians), so it's possible to find them in towns or in quest areas (such as the Golem cave for An Iron Heart Part 1).

The mimics are the suspicious crates. They only have a slight chance to spawn when you kill the suspicious crate.
