Just had my first serious death penalty, and man that top step's a doozy. The previous penalty had been a couple of cubes and some zombie meat, so I pressed on regardless and the next one took my one liquid emerald. O.o

Am I right in thinking that if that LE had still been a stack of cubes in inventory, I almost certainly wouldn't have lost all of them? (I had six soul points at the time)

Maybe the better question is; why are you carrying so many emeralds on you?

its a % of your emeralds
So no matter what you lose the same
Also it increases the lower your soul points go

    I think I understand what you're saying
When you die it should drop a percentage of emeralds like for example: you have 1le and 50% should drop about 32 EB but you're wondering if it has a 50% chance to drop the whole LE. Correct?

Because I'm new, don't have enough bank space yet, and emeralds are the most easily replaced thing in my newbie-butt hoard. I was pushing for 40 at the time to open some more slots.
Also because the first zone kind of trains you to do that, with the bank and identifier being so far apart.

Yeah, basically. I didn't expect the DP to give change, but I'm surprised to see it drop liquid when there's individual emeralds and cubes available. Did I just roll a critical failure there, or does it always round up?

For emeralds, it check what you got and roll a % for every single item related to money you got. For example, if you're at 20% chance to drop emerald and you are holding 10 emerald blocks, the 20% chance will roll 10 times for each individual block you got, which can make you drop between 0 and 10 blocks, but most likely only 2.

Works the same for any drops upon death.

That's not actually complicated in terms of videogame logic, there's nothing simpler than doing the same check on every item in a list. It does make the actual risks complicated though, mathematically - if you die with seven soul points, you'll *probably* lose about 2% of your money, but there's always a non-zero chance of losing all of it.

So, compacting emeralds into blocks and bottles is a bit of a gamble. It skews the odds, makes it more likely that you'll lose all or nothing instead of an average amount. (I 'should' have lost about 8% of my emeralds, instead I lost over half because I made the mistake of exchanging my first stack of cubes for one liquid, essentially as a victory dance. Expensive lesson.) This detail should probably be mentioned on the wiki page for Soul Points.

At least you HAVE a bank in ragni. This is like ppl complaining about how the item buyer in nesaak is too far from the bank.

The first bank used to be on the far side of Newbie Mirkwood? Brutal. It does train new players to carry all their money though, because at first you need all your money to ID the items you're finding. Then it trains you to compress your money because you never have enough inventory space. *Then* it teaches you that compressing money makes it super droppable. That's pretty hardcore.

'Course, if I hadn't learned that way out of my league on on top of the Cockatrice mesa it would only have been a corpse run. :dizzy:

Nah, I'm fine. Just got my first chain lightning weapon from some lucky powder upgrades. (And a whole lot of rooting through Gundalf's bins.)

If probability math was simple, casinos wouldn't be profitable. What's your most likely total value loss if you have two stacks of emeralds, three blocks and a liquid on a 20% drop chance?

If my simple calculations are correct, with a rounded number, wouldn't you, according to the drop chance, most likely drop ~26 emeralds and ~1 emerald block?

Yeah, something around there, but the average emerald loss is almost ten times that due to the value of the liquid. Things like this make risk bloody hard to quantify.

I might have missed a couple of quests or something, but at 38 all I have is the Mummy (Insane bullet sponge) and Cockatrice. (I die if I blink on that mesa, chickens spawning inches behind me every few seconds) I'll probably just grind this bit out.
