It's a max of 5 actually. And poison ticks activate stealing. Also drop chance scales with attack speed, so an optimum setup of 65% and using a Taurus, (Super slow = 100% efficiency, so on 65% of hits an emerald drops) 2 hits and 6 poison ticks will make a mob drop around 4/5 emeralds. You can then have a friend with a high lb set finish the horde off. Like that, a group of 30 mobs will give you around 3-4 eb, not including item drops.
