Discussion ??? Lore

So I've been keeping up with the ??? Hunt and all of its puzzles, ciphers and stuff. But the one thing I still don't understand is the whole lore behind it. Why are there a bunch of labs? Where's sohso? If someone with knowledge of this stuff can answer it would be greatly appreciated.

 

All in all, there's all these meteors from space that make you feel real good man, and all these scientists found these meteors and felt real good, and it's up to us to find out why these meteors make them feel real good.

Oh yeah and these meteors also can make like advanced technology (like computers) or something. I think

 

Sohso may or may not be dead. He fled to Fruma and nobody heard from him so he is the real "???" Behind ???

 

Yahya, Nohno, and Mehme were widely regarded as the best minds in all of gavel with vast abilities both scientific and magical. There was also a fourth brother named Sohso who did not have quite the amount of fame as his siblings and was heading to Fruma during the time in which Y, N, and M were studying the meteorites.

The meteors were enchanted by presumably an alien species with a powerful cosmic curse that drove villagers who had prolonged contact with the things to madness over their hobbies. In this situation, Yahya liked fungi and became obsessed with mushrooms. Nohno liked chickens and became obsessed with and even married them. It is also mentioned that Mehme is obsessed with nuts, but he shows no sign of this in his room or his dialogue.

Each brother studied their own respective meteor (red, blue, yellow) and it could be said that Nohno was the sort of "leader" of the three, as his laboratory gives you access to the main (white) meteor and he seems to be the most sane during dialogue, but this is purely theoretical. The meteors themselves were first spotted by the three gavel observatories and began falling from the sky somewhat recently iirc.

This is the lore of it to the best of my understanding, if I got anything wrong or left something out then by all means let me know.

And in From the Bottom it is mentioned that Mehme likes nuts.
