Okay, hold on a sec.

This is 18 billion billion: (assuming that a billion is a thousand million)

18,000,000,000,000,000,000

That number is even larger than the amount of money I have (very surprising I know)

Possibilities:

1. The developers coded and designed 18 billion billion planets (highly unlikely)
   
2. The planets are randomly generated but there's an 18 billion billion limit (due to map size or something)

The title is "No Man's Sky" but space isn't the sky.

The sky is just sunlight being reflected off the Earth's atmosphere, usually at low wavelengths (such as blue).

Just to fix my previous mistake I made in my last comment, the 1.8x10^18 number is actually 2^64 (binary digits and 64 bit seeding) and is the absolute limit for modern technology.

And while I'm speaking logically I should also mention that of the 2^64 number of planets (on the website some are called "stars" even though you would burn up before landing if they really were stars) quite a lot of them would have very similar flora and fauna.

Yes, each planet could have a unique combination of structures and life, but the devs can only code so many models and sprites, music and such.


No real hate for Bank or No Man's Sky. I'm glad something actually decent is being announced. I don't like the walking "bobbing" effect though.

Correction: how many they made, not limit.

They made enough assets to generate eighteen quintillion unique planets. That's around about exactly how many there are.

But the actual limit (if they had many more assets) would be 2^63 - 1.

Yay can't wait to play it, I'm not sure I'm going to make it to the center of the universe...I'll most likely get distracted and visit every planet I see o.o

They put some earth species into the random procedural flora/fauna generator in hope that someone will find a planet exactly like Earth
