How Do You Open A Chest

I see chests everywhere but cant open if thats by design ok. but i walked in an area that said find 3 loot chests. I saw one that had gold squares on the top i was guessing that was one. if not ok if so how do you open them whats the button

If you have particles on. Then click the chests with particles coming off them.

 

Some chests can be opened, and others cannot. A simple right click opens them.

If they emit yellow particles, they can be opened.

 

Chests with particles flying off them can be opened.
Yellow-brown "Crit" particles are T1 or T2 Loot Chests, and white "firework" particles are T3-T4 Loot Chests.
In some cases, Loot Chests are for some reason placed under a block, in which case they cannot be opened.

As well as loot chests, Ender chests can be opened and used as a bank.

A few quests require you to find a chest, like the underwater beginning quest. You don't actually have to interact with "quest chests" nor can you interact with them.
