Story-writing, enemy-placement/tactics, or item balancing. You need to be at least -competent- in one of those, and good at another to really get considered. And go maximum effort on your application. Seriously.

Without exaggeration, a good 90% of the GM applications we get are 100 words or less. Less is not more.

I don't have much else to say than what Selvut already said, but make sure that the application is easy to read, and not just a wall of text. I know that one has come up in discussions in GM chat.

Here is the abridged version of the Dos and Don'ts of GM.

Source: I was a former GM for Wynncraft, and I have a PhD in Bullshittery.

    Application)
Don't cheat. They'll know if you did it or not.
Don't write quests that are "OHOHOHOHOHO FINAL BOSS GOTTA KILL HIM AND GET MONEYS"
Don't write quests for completely different provinces. It took them two years to make Gavel, what makes you think they can build another 50000 block landscape for just because your quest wills it?
Don't have lifeless husks of NPCs that literally just emit the line "Oh noes, I lost my hat, now here are the coordinates to get my hat back from the other side of town because I am incapable of walking."
Don't make ridiculously overpowered items, or items in general without at least putting some serious thought into it.
When making quests, mobs and items, think about what it would be like to be the player in that situation. Would you want to play the game if those things you want to add are there?
What's your favorite quest? Take note of what you enjoyed about that quest and learn from it.
Don't use Creeper mobs. Ever. They're meant to be rare and elusive, peacefully existing in their mountaintop solace, heavily guarded by ravenous pig-people.
The Item Guide is your best friend when designing items. Some items may have the same level and rarity as yours already, so try to find a slot that doesn't have one.
Unleash your inner chuunibyou and go wild.
If you can build/write/sing/read/draw/do a handstand/breathe/eat, include it in your application!
Don't make a quest about a dwarf that lost his socks. Salted is tired of reading 5164 apps a day about bearded midgets with footwear fetishes.
Please For The Love Of God Do Not Type Like This It Is So Annoying To Read This
    {[("!alSo use, pNctaton % spel..ling coReCktLy?")]}
You don't need to know how to write YMLs yet. Please write them as they would appear in-game.
Pastebins are good for making your applications easier to navigate. Put your quests, items and mobs in there.

    Trial)
So you made it to trial. Well, I hope you had a list of quest ideas prepared beforehand.
Get a Skype. Just do it. Maybe when your parents aren't around.
Making entire builds for the quest is nice and all, but not necessary. What IS necessary, is a unique and engaging quest.
If you did well enough to score on the GM app, you should be good to go with the trial. Provided you didn't CHEAT.
Ask for help if you need it.
Learning to YML is a bit difficult, but until you become a master at it, ALWAYS parse your code with a parser tool before transferring it to GM. Otherwise you'll glitch the server, the chat will explode like Krakatoa, and the cow will be very upset.
When finished with your trial, test it to make sure it works.
Testing is good practice. DO IT.
When you're very sure that you're ready, spam the shit out of Salted to review your trial.
Continue to do so even if it warrants a restraining order.

    GM)
Prepare for your creativity to get buzzsawed as ALL of your quest ideas go down the drain in a flash.
When people dick around on the build server, you let it happen.
Don't abuse /kick unless someone else kicked you first. Because that is a declaration of WAR.
Don't create easter eggs on the build server, no matter how sneaky you think you are. They WILL find you.
If you need help, don't stop spamming chat until someone is bothered to notice your existence.
Kiss Grian's ass so that he'll give you more karma and you can become a Master GM.
Create a shrine in the name of Grian in your room and pray to him every night that he may gain more subscribers for his YouTube channel.
    ALWAYS TEST YOUR SHIT.
Leaking is bad, so don't do it.
    Praise Houki.
