When sunlight reaches Earth's atmosphere, it is scattered in all directions by all the gases and particles in the air. Blue is scattered by air molecules more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time.

Closer to the horizon, the sky fades to a lighter blue or white. The sunlight reaching us from low in the sky has passed through even more air than the sunlight reaching us from overhead. As the sunlight has passed through all this air, the air molecules have scattered and rescattered the blue light many times in many directions. Also, the surface of Earth has reflected and scattered the light. All this scattering mixes the colors together again so we see more white and less blue.

 

BTW, I apologize guys for not being on the forums. The title is not self given, a guild member actually just called me that once and I thought it sounded cool. My apologies, I tried answering the ones pertaining to Wynncraft Lore. I have some questions about the ones you guys asked and am currently reading about them to learn as much as possible. Downroar still doesn't explain why it's specifically blue light and not another color (red, purple, green, psychedelic rainbow, etc.)

To answer that, I believe it has to do with the high concentration of nitrogen gas in our atmosphere. If you want, I can go into the physics/chemistry behind why nitrogen makes blue light, but if you don't care, I won't bother.

My only question is why sunsets are orange/red/yellow instead of blue. Does it have to do with the critical angle of reflection v. refraction?

 

Coz Earth is a sphere and so is the atmosphere, during dawn and dusk the sunlight will pass through thicker layer of air to reach the same point(use imagination, or trust me) this allows more light with longer wavelength to be refracted therefore the sky is red and yellow.

 

Could you draw a highly detailed diagram with labels and colorful graphics?

the light blue is atmosphere and the two lines represent the distance that the sunlight travel in the atmosphere at different times, you can see that the sunlight travel a longer distance through the atmosphere at dawn/dusk, allowing more fraction of higher wave length lights aka red and yellow

 

Cool. I was hoping it would be something more fun like blaming the curvature of space time over a large distance due to earth's gravitational field causing the greater redshifting of light waves, but I guess your explanation makes sense.
