Guide A Guide/rant Towards General Suggestions

A few things before I start this rant, y'know, to prevent mindless flame wars:

1. This is not a rant targeting ANYONE SPECIFICALLY, it covers the general population (pun intended), so don't ruffle your feathers and say something insanely controversial.
2. I do not think all of general suggestions is bad. There are some really good threads by @Ascended Kitten, @Dirtobert, and @thatswhatido just to name a few (There are MANY more that fly under the radar for most).
3. Instead of trying to say "I don't do this" or "This offends me," this thread is made to improve others, not to say "Never write something again," as I love reading some of the quests there.
4. I will not be one of those "Youtube ranters" cursing at every turn and having no logic whatsoever.

Alright, even though I wrote that, I can almost guarantee that there will be 20 posts saying I'm a mindless hater but never mind that. The "TL;DR" is at the end.

Part 1, Detail:
So lately, I've been seeing a lot more posts in general suggestions with low amounts of effort being put into them. I get it, you have a good idea, and you want to share your content to mold Wynncraft into something better. But please, please, PLEASE put actual time into this. Not just quests, but item suggestions, dungeon suggestions, or even adding a merchant. If you don't care enough to make something of value, why should someone else value it?

Mob statistics, item rarity, item statistics, IDs, slots, cost, whatever it is, needs DETAIL, and I cannot stress this enough. The excuses "I don't understand it" or "The new system is complex" are not valid. In school, if you don't understand what American Football is, and you have to write a 300 word essay on it, yet you return with a paragraph having no detail whatsoever, what do you think will happen? "Oh, sorry little Jimmy, you don't have the criteria, but I'll just pat you on the back and give you a 100% for effort." No, that will not happen, you will fail become a hobo.

Part 2, Using other's content:

This is much rarer than the previous scenario, as in, once every 500 posts in there, but I'm covering it anyway. "Why?" you might ask. Because this happened to me before the wipe, and I honestly want to avoid it happening to someone else/prevent others from doing it.

Long ago, one of my first suggestions was a squid dungeon, with mob stats, sounds, floors, puzzles, and all that stuff that makes up a dungeon. A few days later, I get a message saying I copied someone word for word, and naturally I was confused, as I had checked the section up to 10 pages back to see if anyone had done this, with no results. A bit later, I realize that the guy I had supposedly "copied" changed his housing suggestion into my squid dungeon, and since his thread was made before my thread, I was technically the bad guy there.

Although I highly doubt that someone will go to that level of theft with more staff on the forums, it's still wrong to use someone else's content without permission, even in minor ways. Saying that you're "transforming it" into something else without asking is not a valid point unless it truly is a completely unique concept. Don't be one of those mindless reactionists, put effort into being unique!

Part 3, Ignoring help:

I briefly mentioned this in the beginning, but I'll sum this up nice and quick. When someone says, "Hey, I think that X isn't right and Y is loosely formatted, this is decent otherwise," that is not "H8" as people seem to call it. When someone is trying to help you, accept the help! When I first started writing, do you think I was Mr. Perfect? Well I wasn't, and I'm still far from perfect, but at the same time, I took the advice to thought and made myself better. So...... why are people now getting all offended by constructive criticism?! Like Nike's adverts say, just do it.

Part 4, Repetitive concepts that don't work:

The name of this part is pretty self-explanatory. Personal guild bases, using Elytra in normal gameplay, more horse tiers, etc. are basically spam considering that they've been proven close to impossible/game breaking/irrelevant. Enough said.

Part 5, Not doing research:

Again, I briefly went over this during Part 1, but this needs to be its own section. Besides mob/item statistics, put some effort into whether or not a quest at X level or Y location exists before writing it out, what the average levels are for an area, etc. Why would there be level 80 mobs close to Ragni? Or a fire monster out in the Durum Isles? Or corruption in Gavel? Don't just write whatever you want, it has to merge with the story preset, not write "Oh this is the final quest ever with 1 million hp and 999 defense t =o all elements," because Grian him said to not make a story that is "the ultimate being," as it's their game, their story, and their final say for almost everything.

Part 6, TL;DR
There is none, just read it.

There, I tried to be a nice as possible, just try following these guidelines and you'll be fine for making quests, items, mobs, etc. Happy writing!

I can agree with most if not all of the points on this thread. Many suggestions just come across as lazy and irrational.

I already know most of this, but this thread needs to be shown to everyone before starting to make suggestions. Well done.

 

I've seen quite a few MC forums out and about, and all but 1 that I have seen don't have messages longer than this reply. This 1 exception is where we are now. Those crappy, short, and with little thought suggestions are practically the norm in most MC forums I've seen, and I feel like most people who make these types of suggestions are new to the server, or at least new to this forum, and are used to what's normal on other forums.
