    I have completed the quest up until the point to where it says i need to ask for my reward but when i ask he just keeps talking about how big of a mess it is and that i need to follow the instructions he gave me? any advice?

    You might have missed a part in the quest book. Otherwise, it's best to backtrack. Usually, you might have missed some command block thing when you travel too fast.
