To The Community : About The "theories"

Hello ! Thank you for stopping by today, but this might not be a pleasant experience, as I'm about to rant.

Basically this is addressed to the community as a whole, but more specifically to the theorists, those who do researches about the lore in Wynncraft. I wanted to talk to you about said theories, because recently things have begun to get out of hand, with people arguing more and more severely about who's right and wrong. I'm not saying that all theorists don't do their jobs, some deliver exquisite theories and I encourage you to follow their example.

[TL;DR]: Be careful about what you say, please

I want YOU to reconsider what a "theory" should be. Is a theory a lots of facts bluntly put together ? Is a theory a long series of assumptions ? No. No it isn't. That would be a hypothesis, where facts are used to create an idea, and which is highly probable.
A theory, on the other end, is when you take this idea, and use all related knowledge, try to link them together in a way that makes perfect sense, with no dark spots and most importantly, you MUST try to prove it wrong. By all means, with every little piece of evidence. If it resists this test and is still plausible, then it becomes a theory, a well-crafted proposition which can be regarded as correct and be used for new hypothesis' (Since we deduced that..., then...?). Look at it as a web, it is unbreakable because it is well made, whereas a hypothesis is a single thread.
The thing is with your theories is that you "postulate" too much, you assume something is true only for it to serve your idea, when you should prove it first. Also, be careful about the vocabulary you use, you shouldn't use the terms "confirmed" or "deduce" lightly, like here :

Now, I'm not saying that @SPYROHAWK is wrong nor right, but as of this day, we cannot confirm that Dern is dark, since we haven't seen any in-game proof, and the Wynncraft staff hasn't stated anything either. It is strongly hinted that Dern will be dark, but we can only suppose, relying on this information is not possible.

I am not, in any conceivable way, trying to dissuade you to stop making theories/hypothesis, but please, be careful in how you proceed. In fact, here's a quick guide in how I personally think you should elaborate a theory :
1) Come up with an idea
2) Do some serious researches, in-game, on the wiki, or ask for help on the forum, more often than not people will happily help you out
3) Try working all the facts together
4) LET. IT. REST. Try not thinking about it for a few days
5) After that break, look at it again. Does it still seem plausible ?
6) Find everything against it. Again, ask for help
7) When you have found an explanation for each detail, leaving nothing unchecked, post it proudly on the front page of the forum. And watch it being debunked in three hours

Finally, and this is the most important part, be nice, or at least polite, whether you're defending your theory or criticizing another one : you do not hold all the answers, and might be wrong. And if you face someone who is obviously wrong, be patient.

We need more people like you in society. Theories seem to have more and more gray spots lately, and everyone wants to figure out who is closer, and by being closer or making a guess instantly gains both criticism and praise to the extremes.

 

I'd rather have theories that research things we already know of, but give a whole new perspective on a topic, instead of trying to solve a puzzle about something WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT yet.

PLEASE, @SPYROHAWK , TAKE NOTE, WE DON'T NEED A THEORY-ILLUMINATI, NO MORE HOLDING SECRETS, ISN'T THE POINT OF A THEORY MEANT TO SOLVE THE SECRET OF SOMETHING?!

In fact, I could make a theory about the Theory-Illuminati if I wanted to.

Hey, if any of you "super-secret theorists" are reading this, cut the fucking act, and stop holding all your "facts" to yourselves, cut the bullshit, and socialize with the community instead of holding secret meetings about something you think is fact.

I fully agree with this. Considering that the lore is currently incomplete, I don't see why people go and start boasting about how what they say is 100% confirmed when the forums prove it wrong 2 minutes later.

 

Alright, so ever since the Gavel update came out. More and more "theorists" have been popping up. This is due to the Gavel update expanding a whole lot more on lore. Pre-Gavel, there was plenty of lore and secrets around; however, now that Gavel is out and with a whole lot more lore than pre-Gavel. There is more to talk about, and from what I've seen, a lot of the forum's "theorists" are noobies. I'm not saying their theories are implausible, but they most definitely need to be worked on. The lore community is stuck in an awkward place. We have a lot of stuff to yet discover and explore, but at the same time we don't have enough; meanwhile, our theorists aren't experienced enough. We can list names, places, and hypothesize, but we can't confirm much. There are 2 other provinces that would provide so many more answers, and I'm betting that there is even more content, that will be released, in Gavel. I think we should, as a community, be compiling info, rather than making theories.

 

I agree. I would also like to add an other argument about why we should take more time to build theories : simply consider how much time the devs put into making Gavel possible. Wouldn't it be fair to play the game and really enjoy slowly discovering everything rather than rushing ourselves then waiting two more years for the next expansion doing nothing ?

Well what @SPYROHAWK theorizes about is already debatable so the things he keeps to himself are things that he knows can't be confirmed with a good amount of certainty. It's not like he's in close contact with the GMs. He has access to information everyone else has access to, so he knows that his theories might not be right and only pushes out ideas that he's already given a bunch of thought on. The things he doesn't talk about are things that are highly questionable and are why he really wants the whole lore out already.

 

I know it wasn't the best example, but it was the one that made me want to write this thread, so I went for it anyways

Not that there's anything wrong with full paragraphs, in fact, if you have that much stuff to say, MAKE a full paragraph.

It's a shame too, because some of his are well done and I really appreciate, but lately he's been rushing to conclusions, probably due to the overflow of new content

 

Personally, I'm in the grey area on theories of hate or like. Some of them are what I theorize in the story of my perspective, and I can contribute to that idea, by what info I have to give. Then again, I see a majority of theories in the front page, and it get's repetitive.

But every theory has the same voice. There's multiple voices.
The most common, polite and fwanccuey.
Some are just stupid, "ERMGRD WHAT DOES DIS MEAN CUD IT BE, SALTED IS A COW?" (Example)
Others are polite, but can be agressive. "Oh levioussa." Then, "WHAT THE FU*& YOU DON'T AGREE? MINE IS RIGHT U RONG."
I'm not pointing fingers. I'm just saying in the most jokingly way with some actual information.
You are right. People should NOT rush. They should take time, piece it together, see what other people think, and if it gets through the process, then yeah you can press that button, that says, P-O-S-T--T-H-R-E-A-D
Anyways, keep theories at a minimum. Some are just helping the sh%$ postings.

Just stop, take a minute, $0l1Ux is blind enough, I don't need an extra pair of glasses.
We just want to see GOOD theories, and if you have posted a million now, and you still do the same thing, do something different, abstract, WE NEED BETTER THEORIES, and make sure you are not just posting the exact same theory as someone else has, check if that theory is OPEN.
(Gawd someone needs to make the theory rule book here, oh wait- the thread crea- Thanks thread creator! Improve that rule book!)
