So it's pretty obvious that in Gavel, the Decay is represented as a form of darkness, withering the land. With some of Gavel's inhabitants trying to prevent the decay, and uphold the light. This got me thinking... and when people like me really think, barely anything good comes out of it. So buckle up, because whether you agree with me or not, this passage might turn out to be something you're interested in. I'll try to make this as short as possible. Let's start with the title of this post, "Light Is A... What?" With enough over analyzing, light is a parasite. Light is a thing that comes for itself and for itself only, and only gives to its offspring. Let me explain. The history of Gavel depicts that over 1,000 years ago, the forest was a place of light, pure light, until darkness came along. Yet, before that, so many years ago that we don't even know, the same thing happened, yet with the roles reversed. This area, before this planet even existed, was empty space. Pure darkness. Then, light comes along. Light doesn't consider that darkness was there first. Light makes a light source, in this case, the sun, and makes a planet full of light. Light took from the darkness, and made a nest for its offspring, which in this case are plants, villagers, and even us. It takes its offspring, and it teaches them to love the light, to NEED the light. To hate the dark. Now, before you go saying, "Oh, I don't mind the dark, the dark is pretty cool," I understand that some people like the dark, including myself, but in a world with a smaller sun, or no sun, it would be cold, plants would die easily and then, in turn, animals. Eventually we learn that the light keeps us alive, and we start to love the light, as it planned. Not that we had much of a choice though, because as I said, the light kept us alive. Soon, the light taught us to hate the darkness. So, when the darkness came, we learned to fight it. Then, the darkness did come. We thought of it as an intruder, a bad thing, but only because we learned to love the light. Gavel is a perfect example of that. The darkness never wanted us here, so it's telling us to get out. The light wants to stay, so we want to stay. Now, we do all we can in Gavel to fight off the darkness. To help the light. To help a parasite.

Well, I may be right or wrong, but that definitely felt good to discuss.

Remember: It may not seem like it, but
    LIGHT IS A PARASITE

TL;DR: Light used the darkness's space to create soldiers to fight for itself.

I'd look at it less as protecting the Light, and more as protecting their stuff. The villagers are really just protecting themselves and their possessions, which they may count the Light as a possession of their's as they live outisde of the decay. They are protecting their possessions that are in the Light, making the light one of their possessions. If they loose the Light to the Decay, they loose their stuff. And, as you stated yourself, light is a helpful resource. It plays a big part in photosynthesis, which feeds animals and thus us, and it's a source of heat which can be helpful in other ways. Another reason someone wouldn't want to loose light.
Though if you wished, you could still argue that "But that's what the Light wants you to think! Conspiracy conspiracy". And ignore this entire counter

TL;DR: they aren't protecting the light, as much as they are protecting their stuff in the light

I could, but I'm not going to because all I wanted to really get across is something to think about. And you did. So thank you.

now that I think about it, Decay could be the wither/wither effect that has somehow spread across the land, infecting creatures and the landscape alike, as the elves who are immortal even stated they do not know how the decay began

Please not that the Decay is not technically "Dark". It's just not Light. Corruption, Darkness, Decay, Light, they are all different things. Please keep this in mind

    Huh.
If you take it out of cliche, then yeah, the light most likely is the actual bad guy, and the dark is actually the 'natives' fighting to stay alive.
But, well, the cliches apply in this case. And so the dark sucks, the light rocks.

But we can't live without it, right? Also, the reason there is darkness in Gavel in the first place is because it would be boring without it. The world isn't perfect, and so is Gavel.

Well, I still think light is the "good" one in this case.
What if the nothingness/The darkness was the parasprite from the beginning and the light came and defeated it? Without light, we cannot live. With darkness, only darkness can live.

So, basically, the darkness was there first but the light came and stole the spotlight (hehehehe) and created an army that was brainwashed into worshipping it..?

That would be something interesting to think about and make a theory on, but all evidence we have from our studies as humans shows that there was space, then there were suns.
