Guide What Is A Gm?

Ok, I know, it sounds like pretty simple information but surprisingly, not that many people know the specifics. So, let me cover what GMs don't do:

• GMs are not developers. They do not work on new features and they don't fix any existing features.
• GMs are not moderators. "GM" stands for Game Master, not Global Moderator or something like that. That's why you can apply for GM, but you can't apply for moderator.
• GMs are not command blockers... exclusively. Yes yes, we will be using command blocks with the Gavel Update, but some people have the notion that GMs are the only people who use them. Just as many builders do command block work, if not more.

Okay, so now that's out of the way, let me cover what GMs do:

• GMs make quests. Okay, so, pretty simple, but this covers a lot more than just writing a file. Most of our job comes from design. For example, we will direct builds related to our quests. This also means we have to make sure the builders don't build stuff that interferes with combat, something that allows players to easily get stuck or camp, or just something that looks pretty but doesn't work for a quest. There's a ton more finer details that go into quest design but I could do a whole thread about that.
  
• GMs make mobs. This one's pretty self-explanatory, as mobs are a big part of quests, but our mob creation is not just limited to quests. Any mob you see anywhere was made by a GM. We also place them, which can be annoying at times.
  
• GMs make items. Well, actually, this kind of isn't something most GMs do nowadays. The new item system coming with Gavel is something that most of us can't wrap our heads around.
  
• GMs place loot chests. While you might think it's as simple as placing down a chest somewhere, it really isn't. Buut it's pretty close to that. We put the coordinates on a big file with a list of all of them. We also fix floating loot chests... if we can find out their coordinates.

Builders were more important in the pre-quest era. Without Builders back then this would have never existed. Without Builders, GMs would have never existed.
We're like.. GM their dad's.
