Dern: 3 Realistic Theories

Well... Hi everyone!

I am new the the forums (heck, I made the account just for this post) so sorry if I mess up a bit. I can tell you right now my spelling usually sucks, so just try to understand what I am saying.

Right now Gavel is being worked on, and after a new class has been confirmed. But I am not here for any of those... I am here for the Provence only spoken through whispers and lore: Dern!

I have been interested in Dern ever since I first heard over it. And now, after scrambling over lore and evidence, I have three theories that seems the most plausible for Dern.

1: Corruption
2: Past Wynn
3: Center Of All

So, Lets just jump into it!

Theory 1: A province ended by corruption. (Community Favorite) [Supported by Lore and Storyline]

To start things off, lets assume Dern exists right next to Wynn. Stretching from at least the Abandoned mined (probably higher than that) all the way down and around Nessak and the Jungle over to at least the pigmen ravines. According to this theory, Dern was a province that already fell to corruption long before Wynn even found the first of emeralds.

Lets look at the facts:

Dern was first mentioned when the miners found Emeralds near the now Abandoned Mines.
Emeralds found in Wynn were most common where the corruption rooted itself in.

The rock in those mines was very easy to mine.
Same story near the nether portal.

Lots of emeralds in both places...

The only time Dern is directly mentioned is via Dern Beasts, which are Endermen mobs.
If a province was completely "ended" by destruction, Endermen would be a logical choice of mob.

There is an End portal near the Abandoned mines.
Possible Entrance way?

Prior to the Dead island (and Alive island) There was Enderman Island in the same spot, inhabited by Dern Emigrants. Note that it is Emigrant, not Immigrant. An Immigrant is someone who comes a country, while an Emigrant is someone who leaves. This means that the Endermen left Dern, confirming that it is not the same Provence as Wynn.

Problems:

No real problems. But no factual evidence either.

Theory 2: Past Wynn (Personal Favorite) [Supported by Quests and In-Game stuff]

This theory I believe would give the story more to build on if they added as the real reason. Lets assume Dern is really past Wynn. Wynn before corruption. Back when creepers still existed (well they still do...) and before the villagers came.

Evidence:

The Abandoned mines has a fake relic shrine in it. That also happens to be the place where the whispers of Dern started. If the relics existed before the people of Wynn, this explains how they got there. They were built when it was still Dern!

On Alive island there is an egg that Siwel brought over. He could have gotten the egg from the "fake" relic shrine and took it far into the ocean for safe keeping. That would explain the note saying the relic had been moved.

They could have gotten into a war with the creepers, explaining how both species became extinct. (this would also explain that the egg [mentioned above] was put into the shrine when it was realized the war was going badly)

Everything in time valley was built huge. Possibly to accommodate a certain giant dragon? (referring to time valley because its the only place we actually see any type of time magic)

There is another Enderman mob not on the mob list, found in The Ancient City as part of the Wynn Excavation (WE) quest D. It happens to be called an ancient. Linkage? I think so!

Since we have linked Endermen to WE, the endermen could be the explanation of how those crystals for where they are in the first place!

Problems:

The whispers of Dern stated it was a new province on the other side of the mountains, not a province found by a thing in the mountains. (but then, the rumors could be wrong)

The Dern Emigrant situation. This however might not officially count as it was removed.

Fun things they could do if this was true:

A quest line involving two NPCs fighting over who owns a cow. This could lead the the beginings of the bovemists and anti-bovemist churches.

Quest where you help the Endermen hide four crystals. (the ones found by Wynn Excavation)

Instead of one entrance like Gavel, they could have the entrances be the ender portal in near the abandoned mines, and something in the mines. Exits could be through the mines and the door of time.

Take a look at the powders when put on armor. Green (thorns) makes sense. blue (feather falling) makes no sense since there is no fall dmg, but that does not look to be changed. Red (blast prot) makes almost no sense due to not many things exploding in wynncraft. If you could go back in time to when creepers roamed the land, red powder would be much more useful on armor.

Theory 3: Merlyn (Currently In Matenance) [Supported by Hidden lore and Logic]

Ok, so theory 3 is not really a Theory, but an add on to theory 2. I wanted to make it its own theory because it has its own reasoning, evidence, and problems. So, lets jump right in!

In this theory, we are going to look into 3 main things. A very strange character, A cave in an island in the ocean, and a letter only found in fragments.

Evidence:

So we start off with a certain celebrity, Bob, and his friends. Bob seems to have a few friends. He has his animal companions, but he also has some human friends. Tarod is said to be his friend in the Bob's Reincarnation quest. Through community lore, we know he had an archer friend, ICantThinkOfANa. Na is said to be a friend who helped Bob in his travels. But there is a third. Nilrem. Who is Nilrem? We only ever hear of him once. Or do we? In the Sealed Letter found in pieces in the Relic Shrines, we find a note from Robert to Nilrem. Robert is Bob's real name (According to Bob's Reincarnation quest). If this letter is so important that it has been ripper apart and guarded, I'm pretty sure its safe to say Nilrem is a code name. Wynncraft has a habit of re-arranging letters in words. flip Nilrem backwards, and we get Merlin. Some thoeries surround Merlin, some say he is the king of Ragni, some say he is in Gavel, who knows?

In English Mythology, Merlin is a powerful Wizard. Bob is a Warrior, Na is a Archer, we only have Mage and Assassin left. I am going to label Merlin as a mage. If he IS a super powerful mage, where would we find him? Well, it Is stated by Asher that the time magic in Time Valley is much stronger than anywhere else in Wynn. Even more magical, behind the Door Of Time, we have a little forest called by the community, the Enchanted Forest. There is a house in said forest, containing a sign. It reads something like this: "Out for a bit, be back soon. -Merlyn". This may be a bit of a stretch, by come on. Merlin, Merlyn? They have to be the same person. However, other than that small mention, he is never heard from again. Merlyn/Melrin uses words in his little sign, such as Bit and Soon. Words relating to time... I say Merlin got lost in time. He was experimenting with Time Valley and went through the door of time, coming out in Dern. He managed to come back a few times (See next section) but ultimately got stuck in Dern. Why is this so important? Because he helped Bob kill something. Something much bigger than the CoW. Something that only Merlin could have known about. Something from Dern.

In a small isolated corner of the Ocean, we have Dead Island. The only place we see mobs with the word "Dern" In their name. But this is more important than that. Bob came here. He killed something. According to Old Siwel, Siwel brought an egg to the island. On alive Island, you can actually see the egg. Its an Ender Dragon Egg. Lets assume the Point from Theory 2 holds and it came from that relic shrine. It hatched into an ender dragon. But, look at the bones on Dead Island. They are MASSIVE. If Bob died to the CoW, we would have surly died to this beast. Unless he already knew what he was facing. Bob could have told Merlin what was up on that island, and Merlin could have Jumped over to Dern and found out the beasts weakness. He could have then told Bob how to defeat this beast, leading to Bob's Victory on the island. But Merlin could have easily jumped too many times, and ended up stuck in Dern. (There could be a quest involving him)

But before he left for his final trip to Dern, he probably had read Bob's Letter. He knew it would not be safe to keep it, so he split it into several parts and hid them in the Relic shrines, which he knew how to get into from prior trips to Dern. Some of the guards of the shrine are natural, but he could have placed the Golem Guards there to protect the letters. Since Golems are technically from Gavel, the Dernians could not have put them there.

Dear Nilrem,

The letter I enclose to you has been sealed with concealment magicks. I trust you to know how to read it.

My war against the creature is futile. Intel has reached me from a trusted source. Our world is far smaller than we could have imagined, our magick feeble in comparison to what i am about to explain.

There are realms beyond our comprehension, powers we can not hope to defeat. Two immense forces are at war, with our plain of existence being the battleground. There is a dark creature of the night in a land "far" away, it poses a threat to all.

I give you this letter as a warning and a farewell, friend. I am going to challenge the beast and attempt to seal it away using my own life force, for I know that is all i can do, killing it is not a option.

You know of the magic i have infused in my animal companions, I trust you to hide them until one worthy is able to wield my might. The world can not know of my sacrifice, no one must search for me. You must fake my death, and create a body for them to bury.

The fight will continue, but at least the new recruits will have a fighting chance for the years to come. I wish you luck, Nilrem, continue to train the forces of good, you are the most skilled man than I have ever known.

Problems:

The Letter tells Merlin to keep training recruits. So he could have stayed to do that.




Conclusion

I have presented two theories that could explain Dern, and a third one I made up just so I could have three theories. I feel like they wont just make Dern "another Provence" because each province so far was important. Wynn: home to humans, Gavel: villagers, Nether: Corruption/undead, ect.

I included a poll so I could see your guys opinions and hey, maybe the devs will take a look and add one of them in!

This section is about tidbits of info that I feel make sense to put in, but do not correspond to any one theory

This is an excerpt from the Storyline page on the official wiki. It is all that contains anything about Dern from outside of the game.

"...so the humans began to mine in the south east deep into the cliff side, to maintain a constant flow of green stone into the economy. The new emerald mine found it incredibly easy to mine through the mountain and are intrigued to discover what lies on the other side, whispers of a third province named Dern was told from the villagers, though they did not know the exact location, nor did they want to talk about it."

This is also interesting how it said "a third province" This means that Gavel and Wynn were the only ones known before Dern. That means other than Wynn, Gavel, and Dern; there is not widespread knowledge about any other provinces.

Read this carefully: "Trained on the Mage Island in the vast Ocean, mages are a powerful class that can use powerful magic to heal members of a party. Mages are able to travel large distances within minutes thanks to their teleport ability, learnt from the magic of the people of the Dern Province. Although not primarily attacked based, mages are still a great asset to any party of adventurers"

That quote came right out of the unofficial wiki page about mages. (Although it is the unofficial wiki, this line in particular is cited a lot, so I decided to add it in. Lets assume it is viable.) It CLEARLY states that teleportation was learned from the inhabitants of Dern. Endermen teleport (duh). This 100% confirms every suspicion about endemen being the inhabitants of Dern.

Note how they say "three provinces"? This makes it seem like Dern is wide spread knowledge in Selchar. Also, it confirms that there are no more provinces than the Wynn, Gavel, and Dern

Although many people have stated Dern is probably near the Ocean, due to the fact that's where Dead Island (and formerly Enderman Isalnd) Is found, The storylines clearly state they mined through the mountain to the south to find Dern. The islands in question are at the north east of the ocean. Also, south is where the abandoned mines are, so I assume those are the mines that were used for finding Dern.

Also, interestingly enough, the abandoned mines show up on the map, and the official wiki mob list does list mobs coming from there, but It does not have an actual page on the official wiki... I wander why...

According to the mob list, there are only four occurrences of the endermen. 2 of them have the word Dern in their name (not including the removed ones), and the other 2 being in the tower of ascension.

In Wynn Excavation (WE) quest D, it is stated by Ragni's Kind that when Light and Darkness come together, it creates Corruption. Wynn's alternate dimension is the dimension of corruption, and it has been stated that Gavel's Alternate dimension is the dimension of light. This leads us to assume that Dern's alternate dimension is a dimension of Darkness.

And Grian said a few interesting things. But due to what he said, This current thread is not rendered entirely incorrect. Due to this, I am not longer editing or otherwise looking into this thread. I may make another one on the provinces in general, but for now, if I can, I will be disabling comment and putting this one to rest.

This is deffenetly one of the better, more thought-out theory's that I've heard. But I think it's a bit to early to start debating what Dern is. I mean Gavel isn't even out yet!

But hey, that's just a theory... A WYNN THEORY!

 

I tend to over analyse like everything. so when I relined everyone had overlooked Dern, I did this. In a Q&A with Grian, he did say he wanted to "do one province at a time" when asked about Dern. So they have not completely forgotten, but yeah, it is a bit early.

I don't think it's mentioned anywhere that Bob was killed by CoW. Other than that, good job, I can tell that you put a lot of work into this.

The Dern Beasts must have found a way to go across the mountains.

 

It actually does. He went missing going to fight something in the jungle, which is the location of the CoW. He could not kill it, so he split his soul into his animals, killing himself in the process, in order to trap it in the temple.

Its not feather falling. You don't take fall damage, so feather falling makes less than no sense. Its blast prot. I will still double check when I have the chance.

the part about him disappearing and splitting his power is when he went to fight the beast from dern.

feather falling made sense when wynncraft had fall damage but since it was removed feather falling is only useful to assassin's as their vanish will disappear when they get the non existing fall damage.
since there are no blasts in wynncraft blast protection is used as knockback resistance.

 

Please re-read the page about bob on the wiki.

As for the powder, I can not tell if you are agreeing or dissagreeing

 

sorry, seems like I was wrong. but he didn't die as mentioned in the sealed letters he says he split his power between his animals and now he is going to fight the dark creature of the night in a land "far" away.

as for the powders I just corrected the use.

 

Saying that endermen suit the province because it's probably ended doesn't make sense as endermen mobs are also used as the mob for the ancients in Wynn excavation D. Also once the Gavel update comes around all the powders will change to the new element system, so the powders won't make much sense then.

Not everything in time valley was built huge, if you actually look around the area you will see that it's only the main structure that's massive, and that's because it's believed that this area was mostly a cathedral of sorts as there seem to be a few church 'like' structures around the area.
