Hey! I made this thread to discuss anything related to game development and the industry. It can be anything from some general ideas about how to improve certain aspects of games or to have serious discussions about problems with the industry. I have no idea if this thread will just fail or will it be decently-popular, but let's give it a go.

    A few guidelines before posting:
    - Try to keep it to game development. If you want to discuss a certain game itself, you should make a thread about it. "Any thoughts about ET for Atari?" shouldn't be posted, but "Any thoughts about risky AAA games?" is fine.
    - Try to make your post easy to interact with by asking for opinions (as an example).
    - Don't be afraid to share your game ideas!
    - If you have a sizable post, it might be better to make it a thread. This is intended to be used for small discussions that aren't quite thread-worthy.
    - Don't be aggressive, we don't want flame wars.
These are just guidelines, not rules (well, maybe the last one is more of a rule tbh). It's fine if you don't follow them.

So to start it off, here's my thingy:
What do you think of the amount of support games get from governments around the world?
The US and UK (to name a few) have quite good support, but this shouldn't overshadow the fact that most countries have next to no game companies. Ireland, as an example, has only a few developers, most of which are mobile game based (which means that they compete against candy crack and other giant games). The game industry is still growing, but it's growing a lot faster in some countries than in others.
What is it like in your country?
Do you think that the focus on the game industry in your country is adequate, too small or too big?
What are your predictions for the next decade in regards to this?

Have fun discussing whatever you want to discuss :D
Thanks to @Jeremy© for giving me the idea to make this post!

I don't think my country has decent support to game industry. Few universities offer IT subjects but they are not related to games development.
Plus internet in my country is TOO SLOWWWWWWWW.

My country has fairly good game support, but apart from that, something which needs to change in the games industry has to be the pre-order and micro-transaction culture.
Its just not right, I saw an amazing picture the other day explaining (or well showing) how games and DLC and shiz has changed.
    Comment your thoughts.

    EDIT:
    found it

    Awesome pic xD
I'm fine with micro-transactions myself as long as they are not pay to win or feel like they've been pulled out of the game just so the devs make more money, just like Wynn's GC stuff (especially the bombs).

Ok - first off, I'm really not sure if this is a necropost or not, but I just had to comment on this thread because it calls out to me!

The game industry in Australia is... really lacking. I know next to no major game dev teams that have made it big time, which I think should change.

Me on the other hand, creating games is probably a passion. I've always loved to think up concepts of games (my favourite being the roguelike/RPG type of games). I've learnt the basis of game development, programming etc. but I really haven't been able to go any further - because I've never had a team to develop a game with. I think that's what I'd like to make a living out of, making games (although unlikely here in Australia). If I managed to pull a team together (or joined one) I'd happily step right in and develop a game! But a man can dream, right?

I live in one of the two biggest game developement cities in the world, and I still have trouble finding a team. What I did and would suggest to you is to find a team online to work with. Lots of indie teams have never actually met in real life! To find one of these teams, there are many current ways. Most of the time, they from naturally. The Annes team started when I saw a fan game with a developer that was having trouble designing terrain. Now we have a four person team and growing!

Sorry, but I can't do that.
