I /killed a few times, used a bunch of scrolls, got down to like 9 SP, still can only lose junk items and emeralds 6% of the time.

Even if you're unlucky, at 9 SP you can still only lose emeralds and junk items, and if a bug makes you lose other stuff, just don't play until they fix their game. That's what I did with Pokemon Go.
