I think it’s actually really quite simple (to quote MumbJumbo)

The question „How is ‚Wybel‘ pronounced?“ can be divided into three segments.

The first question is the implicit question of how it is officially pronounced by the name giving authorities. The overall agreement as previously statet is „Wibble“. But when we look at Salteds answer (which, assuming he is the passive legend that he is, is purely based on the word „bull“) it seems to be less serious. Meaning, that there is a division within the authority on how seriously to take this matter/how seriously the official pronounciation is to be enforced. One example of a similiar situation I have in mind is with George Lucas and Star Wars. Here Mark Hamill was confused on how to pronounce the „Han“ in Han solo. Lukas‘ answer was that while he as director could dictate an official way on how to pronounce it he would rather let the actors decide themselves. The reason was that in the real world names are mispronounced all the time and that it would therefor increase the immersion of the fictional world in which similiar things might happen.

The second question is how it is supposed to be pronounced given english grammar.

Two disclaimers from my part A: I’m not a native english speaker B: consistency in english grammar is hardly existent

So, when we look at the word „bible“ for example we can see that the „i“ is similiarly pronounced as the „y“ in why. There are also hints that „i“ and „y“ as in „why“ are interchangable. An example would be the words „try“ and „tribal“. But like in the word „wyvern“ one can also use the „ih“ version. This means that from a mere grammatical standpoint one could use „Why“ or „Wih“ when it comes to the Wybels. In terms of wether „-bell“ or „-bull“ is the correct ending I think that bouth interpretations have some validity. If we look at the word rebel the REbel syllable is stressed and the ending sounds like „-ble“. Yet, if we say „to rebel“ one can stress the second syllable (to reBEL) making it sound like „-bell“. Another thing that I want to mention is the role of the „e“ (or other vocal) after a consonant that is preceded by a vocal. Like, when we take „win“ it is clearly differently pronounced than „wine“ (as in „why-n“). When saying „nylon“ we also have a „y“ as in „why“ instead of saying „nillon“.

So what does this all mean? Well firstly, that all four interpretations mentioned in the poll have some validity/precedent on which basis to perform it. Maybe having them spelled „Wybles“ or „Wybbels“ would make the pronounciation more clear but changing it would be a lot of unneccary work so whatever.

The third question would be, how it IS pronounced as in how common people pronounce it in the field.

The poll shows that different interpretations exist and that it is rather evenly divided on which one is used (except for „Wih-bell“ lol). That is a rather existentialist view as in not caring about theory whatsoever.

In summary I think there is a case to be made for each interpretation on how to pronounce it. Whether one does or does not care about the official way to pronounce it is decided by anyone for themselves. I personally pronounce it „Why-ble“ because I like the sound of it.

I thank Deusphage for shedding light on the official way to pronounce it, Salted, for giving us his cowish insight and of course RandomDuckNerd for opening up this thread. May it be both guidance and a warning for old and future generations on the nature of conflict.

I have to say it was wrong of me to try and enforce that, or in general, one interpretation onto others. Because the fact there is a variety of opinions may be a beautiful thing: it shows that we have different outlooks on the world based on our individual views and experiences, that we are free to think. One should perhaps not try enforce their view onto others, but instead embrace what makes us unique. That is, because harmony is not to be equal, but to live and enjoy life together despite our differences. To view difference as strength and not as chaos. To choose respect over dominance or ego. And, dear folks, maybe thats what Wynncraft is all about. God bless Am… I mean, may Wynn receive Orphions blessing!

Ps: I wrote this during lunch btw. And yes I got IMMENSELY bored
