SPOILER A beautiful story I wrote

Once upon a time, in a land far away, but not super far away, there was a city.
In this city, there lived an old man.
The old man stood upon his tower, looking for birds.
He always stood there, watching.
He never ate.
He never pooped.
He simply watched.
He was still watching when his home was raided and destroyed by dark forces.
He stayed there, amidst the chaos.
Eventually, it was over.
He lived.
Still watching.
He was still watching, hundreds of years later, when a young adventurer came up to him.
He had a bow slung on his back, a dagger and a wand on each of his sides, and was carrying a spear.
The warrior asked, “What are you doing here? Is there anyone else?”

…

The old man stared at him.
First with two eyes. Then with three. Then with four.
Eventually, he was spurting with eyeballs. His body merged with the rock and stone around him, and he started towards the adventurer.
The adventurer ran away, into the forest beyond, until he was merely a speck on the black horizon.

He was never seen again.

Alas, the old bird watcher still stands as a defender of his hometown, mutilating any who dare tread there.
He still watches for birds, though none have appeared for centuries, and will not for centuries more.
He is known as the Omnispective Wanderer… to those who lived to tell the tale.

 

This brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
