SPOILER A more lore-friendly name for Fallen's main buff

With the Bak'al's Grasp ability, Fallen can become Corrupted, which makes them unable to heal, but increases damage for every 2% of health they've lost. When this was announced during the live stream, lots of people wondered how this would fit into the lore, as Wynncraft's main character has always been depicted as an antagonist to Corruption. This is why I suggest changing the name to something more lore-friendly, such as Enraged. If someone else has any other ideas for a name, please do tell!

 

The idea is that the warrior has Fallen from heroism a little bit. They feel that the best way to accomplish their goals in destroying the corruption is by tapping into the power that corruption holds, no matter how evil it is.

 

Honestly I really like that name. Also maybe change Bakal's Grasp to Frenzy?

 

Yeah, this bothered me too! I know someone said Barbarian sometime, and I thought that would work. So would Enraged- there's lots of good names out there, anything would work.

Personally, I think "barbarian" to be somewhat too generic of a name. We have things like "Boltslinger" and "Arcanist," and then, just... "barbarian?" Also, although the name may fit the effects and playstyle (somewhat) of the abilities, it doesn't fit the aesthetics and forms of abilities (somewhat).

What I might change it to is "Tainted" (i.e. of the soul). It still has that feel similar to "Corrupted," but it doesn't clash with any lore. Bak'al's Grasp could be renamed to "Cold Heart" or something of the like.

Honestly though, I think it being named "Corruption" is completely fine. It doesn't make too much sense with the lore, but does it really matter? It sounds cool, and that's the most important thing, imo.

p.s. Enraged Blow is already an ability name

 

Personally, I view the Fallen as desperate renegade heroes allowing their soul to be partially tainted by the Corruption in order to pursue their ideals.
In fact, the Corruption canonically isn’t an evil force, it’s only a mindless force that many choose to harness in evil ways.
However, those affected by Corruption are still often driven mad, regardless of their intent, due to its nature, allowing other foreign forces such as Dern, for one, to exert their influence upon them. A hero seeking greater power through the Corruption may often begin to find themselves sympathizing with its influence, therefore placing them in Bak’al’s Grasp.

It might actually have an impact on the lore somehow, we just don't know until the beta is out. I think it's a little unfair to already assume that the name isn't lore-friendly

 

As someone else mentioned above, the idea is that it's not just a crazed warrior but a desperate hero attempting to fight fire with fire.
Even if the name isn't very lore-friendly, I don't think it matters much because it is simply a name that does not influence or alter the lore in a significant fashion. Being a Fallen Warrior does not mean you're not going to fight the corruption anymore- it just means your methods have changed, which is true!

I honestly really love the concept and name, and I'd be really sad to see it get replaced by something as generic and boring as "Berserk" or "Enraged"

 

Even as somebody who really likes the lore of Wynncraft, I think if you changed the name to something more generic, the Fallen class kind of loses a unique charm. The way you play the game does not mean it has to be perfectly aligned with the lore. The name Fallen kind of spells out exactly what the playstyle is, of a hero who has forsook everything, doing the right things the morally wrong way, and if it was changed to a generic name, then it just loses a lot of its uniqueness. (and also allows for my own personal headcanon with the corrupted system)

 

Additionally it was confirmed by myself, by Salted, and by Zeer in the stream that the term has nothing to do with lore.

 

After reading this thread I agree that it is not necessarily bad name/lore) as someone said, "fight fire with fire".

My only problem is with Bak'al's Grasp, because that is like trying to fight fire with a fire that is actively trying to destroy your house. "Corrupted Soul" or "Corrupted Alliance" would be good names in my opinion, cool and descriptive yet lore-friendly.

But again, this is all just gameplay as Selvut and other ct said, so it doesn't really matter I suppose.

Why would we rename it? The ability just has nothing to do with lore, just like Archer having Twain's Arc isn't particularly relevant to anything.

 

It's awkward having an ability named after a character and having nothing to do with them really, though yeah it doesn't really have to be renamed

 

Look if this is that much of an issue to you just think of it as a "what if" scenario where bak'al starts to corrupt the player.
At least it becomes a fun little thought.
