SPOILER Theory: Lari is a "fake" nice person.

During the first few Realm of light quests, we as players learn that Lari had the power to kill the corruption parasite several times over. However, as she is bound to her supposed morals, she constantly refuses to---eventually ending in Dullahan's death. Even then, she still sticks to her "all people could be saved" mental, but as soon as the player accomplishes what Lari couldn't over the course of hundreds of years, she uses her powers in an attempt to injure/kill the player out of jealousy and frustration.

My theory is that Lari kept to her morals only to defend her mental image of herself, trying to persuade herself that she is simply too holy and perfect to kill. Again, her inability to perform the job as a servant of light caused chaos to spread over the province of Wynn and Gavel, but Lari simply cannot directly accept it---using her powers trying to kill a person who has aided her in quests before and actively trying to rid the corruption, but not a parasite from the literal realm of darkness.

 

Mental stuff I suppose, we dont live for long nor have we been in these sort of situations and using what we have thats what people Would do. The psychology behind immortality and power and thinking is very complicated, we cant use OUR thinking to apply to these. Its complicated. Not saying this is wrong but there are reasons for these actions. The parasite thing was mostly because of morals. She had those morals for a VERY long time and having a GOD say you are worthy based off morals reinforces what you already think tenfold. Lari attacking us was more of a breaking point, all the frustration and problems building up after all that happens released in a fit of rage. It makes sense in a way. If someone just does everything you could never do in a single week when you've been trying for hundreds of years? Seems reasonable in way. Since we would probably try to hit the person and have a hatred for them. It isnt uncommon

imagine if lari was actually a servant of dern, like bak'al and was sent to orphion to protect the parasite to prevent it from being killed

she runs away "chasing" bak'al to leave us to our death vs the parasite

main dern dungeon boss is lari confirmed?

 

this would actually be more interesting than what we currently have

 

what i don't get is why we as the player are apparently orphion's new chosen one but we don't get the cool light powers that lari gets

its an interesting theory, and that much i can appreciate - though i mostly agree w/dakota. their reply generally has most of my thoughts.

a lot of RoL confused me in general w/Lari's character though, and im still trying to oraganize my thoughts into a general coherent character interp
if anything i'd wonder why Orphion would choose her in the first place if she had any foul underlying intentions, i feel like he'd probably know beforehand being a god of light and that

Lari stuck stubbornly to her morals because she, like basically everyone, assumed that light and dark were moral forces rather than forces of nature, and thus ascribed things she was taught to believe as "good" to that nature of Light. Things such as generosity, refraining from killing, giving people chances, such and such and so forth. Of course, she was absolutely mistaken about this, but considering Orphion never bothered to really contact her after her powers were given she had no way of knowing this. To quote what she said to Dullahan in Headless History...

"He showed me all these things and gave me all these choices and... ...He gave me these powers but they don't work or I don't know HOW they work! I want to do the right thing but I don't know what it is and I don't know how to ask what it is..."

Orphion as a being on what's effectively a higher plane speaks cryptically because he doesn't know how to speak properly to a being that is not connected to him directly, and therefore understand his intent by instinct- you see this happen with the the being in the Silent Expanse ultimate discovery too, speaking to Bak'al. That means miscommunication happens- hell, it happened with Bak'al too! Because of that miscommunication and Lari believing Orphion had standards and morals beyond self-preservation, she made assumptions based on what that could mean. Combine that with a naturally stubborn, driven personality, and she tried to exhaust quite literally every other option she had before accepting something she thought was anathema over the thousand years she had. The player managing to do the one thing she believed was the wrong thing to do, and succeeding through that in a matter of weeks, was incredibly frustrating for her- what she was experiencing was something called Cognitive Dissonance. It's a horrible, awful feeling, and she even says that she should feel good that you're able to help in this way.

"...I just am in disbelief. They've been contacted by Orphion himself, allowed into the Taproot, they have a symbol of Orphion's blessing!! They just...walked up, after a thousand years of my putting my entire life into trying to save this province, and do everything I couldn't, in the span of weeks at most! Do you understand how infuriating this is? Can you comprehend such a thing, not having been in my position yourself?... ...I know I should be [grateful]! It's all I've been able to think about. I should be ecstatic! The light will be saved, it should be everything I've dreamed of... But it makes me feel like a complete failure. Like everything I have done has been for naught, that I have somehow been doing everything wrong! I know I have made mistakes. Dullahan would still be... Still be himself, if I had taken faster action, but I can't have done nothing right. I can't accept that."

To her, someone is effectively replacing her by doing something that, as far as she was able to surmise, was the WRONG THING. Nothing was going right and after a thousand years of effort, to be replaced by someone just sweeping in and (seemingly) effortlessly doing what you couldn't is an infuriating feeling. She's not a "fake" nice person, she's just got flaws and troubles to work through. The moment the Guardian wakes up and tells her to stop she has a whole breakdown over trying to kill you.

"TELL ME HOW THIS IS ‘’ENOUGH!‘’ TELL ME, NOW! I-I NEARLY KILLED THEM! I JUST BROKE AND DEFILED EVERYTHING I'VE EVER STOOD FOR!! TELL ME!! HOW COULD THIS POSSIBLY BE THE ANSWER?! HOW COULD THIS BE WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN?! ... T-Trying to murder them because they did what I couldn't isn't dark?"

The Guardian of the Forest has to spell everything out for her in order for her to get the picture, and then she spends an unspecified amount of time(however much canon-time occurs between Finding The Light and Realm Of Light) just sort of ruminating on what that meant and her own failures to come to terms with everything. Just because she did some bad things and made some bad decisions doesn't mean she's a bad person or was faking being nice.

I said it when the quest came out and I stand by it, WC has had shit characters for so long that when they gave us a good character the players didn't (and still don't) know what to do with themselves.
