Quest items Bugged?

Hi!
just was doing a quest where i needed to pick up a rusty shovel, but the shovel cant be picked up somehow. whats worse, i cant leave the area until i return said shovel to a nearby npc. can anyone help me out here? thanks!

nvm, a friend showed me. i had to attack it with a weapon, oddly enough.
