Disclaimer: I am far from the best builder here. I feel like I have reached a point in building where I can step back and see what's helping me improve, and that's why I wanted to share a step by step process for newer players.

    1. Reach endgame on at least one class.
This seems obvious but I think it truly gets overlooked. Getting in to endgame class building when your highest class is level 60 isn't particularly productive; I recommend getting familiar with the playstyle of at least one class at endgame before you take class building too seriously. This will give you a sense of what works for YOU in particular. Everyone has different cps/mana usage, is comfortable with different spell combos and ehp, and prefers different playstyles. Knowing what's right for you can help you reason though recommendations for others and come up with builds for yourself.

    2. Understanding the item pool is everything.
In a lot of ways, I think that 'good' builders are really players who just know the item pool through and through. Anyone who has never played before can randomly click items and happen on a good build, but knowing the pool streamlines the process incredibly.

How can you do this? Lurking around in this subforum, as well as building sections in any discords you're in is a good start. Look at the items everyone seems to use in their builds; these are 'meta' items. Things like Orange Lily, Far Cosmos, and Contrast are very strong and versatile, so they often end up as both an easy and good fit for many builds. Through this you can also start learning what all the terms people use mean -- never be afraid to ask a question, just do it politely.

    3. Just start trying things, but know when to stop and move on.
As is true for learning most things, at a certain point you have to just try. Discords are a great place for this. Start with a concept of a build you want to make (say, TWF warrior), and use the item pool knowledge you've built to fill in items (in this case, maybe Sparkweaver, Anima, and Infernal Impulse). If you can't think of anything for a slot, search using wynndata.tk to find a viable item to put there. Then, bring it to the discord channel and ask for some help.

It's important in all of this to know how to take criticism. If someone is criticizing your builds (hopefully constructively), first know that it isn't an attack against you as a person. Second, try to understand what they are saying. Sometimes, a more experienced builder will simply ask why you chose an item. You can explain your thoughts, or even say "I couldn't think of anything better." Other times, they will give a suggestion for how to improve it. Plug their suggestion in (to wynnbuilder) and see if you like it more; it's always okay to disagree.

However, a more experienced player might tell you that what you are trying to do isn't viable or even feasible. This is the point where I think many new builders go wrong. If you feel like your concept was good, it's easy to attach pride to it and refuse to stop trying. But, at a certain point, it's just running into a brick wall repeatedly. Knowing when to stop allows you to put energy elsewhere and keep improving.

If I may add something, I think it's worth noting that you shouldn't be offput completely if someone says your build is bad or unviable. As a user of several ugly builds myself, I've never made a single build that can't handle late-game challenges. There are almost always means to improve your build, but if you made something that can work and you like using, I'd consider that a great success. It's still important to take advice, but it's important to remember that, at the end of the day, the point of the build is to use something you can use well and something you enjoy using. Even if you enjoy using something that other people might think is awful, make sure to take the advice for future builds if you are content with what you currently have.

But it is important to remember that if you're working with a concept you think you'd really like but you can't get it to work no matter what you do, then there is a time where you should drop it for the time being or approach it from a new angle. Worst comes to worst, somebody will pick your concept up and make something really cool with it that you'd still enjoy. Don't get discouraged, but know your limits. Nobody here is perfect.

Yes, well put. I don't mean to say "don't play anything but meta" but I do think it's good to learn what the optimal options are before going towards something more fun

Hey this is really helpful! I am relatively new to Wynncraft and only just got my first class up to lv.95. I am very clueless as to which items are good for builds and my class building involves a lot random guessing and trial and error. What you wrote is kinda relatable in where I'm at now :) So I guess I just have to be familiar with the item pool huh
