1.17 snapshots release every other week, and it's pretty fun to test stuff and read through the changelog. This latest snapshot added lush caves (which look way better than I expected), some new ore generation stuff, and one HUGE feature that nobody seems to be talking about.

Now, I would've posted this in the minecraft subforum, but I felt that in this forum more people would see it, including CT members and people who could and maybe will use this feature in the future.

So anyway, what's this new feature? What has been added that could change Wynn for 1.17 clients?

Well, Optifine has always been a pretty cool mod, since it reduces lag, allows you to zoom, custom capes if you pay them money and shaders

Yeah, that's right. Minecraft's new rendering engine ALLOWS FOR SHADERS TO BE USED IN RESOURCE PACKS. This could have quite a good purpose in wynn, which I will get onto.

Now, when I read this in the changelog, I thought to myself ''Wait, they added shaders in? Or are they talking about something else?'' Turns out a Mojang employee made a resource pack that you can use to test the new shaders that makes leaves, grass and water, move a little to emulate wind. So yes, it is pretty much the same shaders used in Optifine.

So how can Wynn use this? Well, unfortunately it'd only work on 1.17+ clients, but it'd come as part of the Wynnpack and would probably use some generic shader stuff (rippling realistic water, leaves and stuff move etc). This would change the vibe of the game without the need for optifine. Now there's only one problem. It would probably lag people who play on a potato in 1.17. The new rendering engine did bring up the hardware requirement a little, but not enough for people with the bare minimum for it to not suffer from lag. However, there is a solution for that (i think).

When I first joined Wynn, I remember that I had a GUI offering me a 16-bit wynnpack or a 32-bit wynnpack. I'm pretty sure that GUI doesn't exist anymore. Well, it could be revived for the 1.17 clients, saying something like ''Shader wynnpack (High end computers) or Regular wynnpack (Low end computers)''

yeah i dont know im just sure the wynn developers will find some way to make it work

also wynn can be really laggy if you dont have a high end computer so it might not matter anyway

One more problem still stands, but it's more of a worry. The height limit changes introduced in 1.17. I fear that these changes could actually end up causing Wynn to not support 1.17 clients, and cap at 1.16. If this happens, this thread is completely just invalid and not something that'll happen.

But yeah, that's all I really have to say. I just wanted to make this community know of this potentially amazing feature. Let me know how you would feel about this

Some folks can already barely move and cast spells due to how laggy they are in wynn, imagine playing in 1.17 :doom:

Except 1.15+ has good clientside performance. It's only serverside that sucks, and wynn is in 1.8 so that doesn't matter

Uh if I'm not mistaken wynn is in 1.12, and server performance doesn't increase at all past 1.13, only alternative server styles would be able to host servers as large as wynn, and those are still far in the experimental phase.

Anyways, incorporating a shader to the resource pack would be a grand waste of time, many people can enjoy wynn without the shaders, the shaders make certain areas way too dark to see, and most of all: why can't you just get optifine and download your own shader? It's very easy.

as long as they have an option for you to use a non-shader resource pack, then... maybe?

Updating pretty much anything to newer versions would take a huge amount of time to recode the majority of how Wynncraft works. This would also mean that future updates would take longer to comeback out. I don’t believe that the Wynncraft team plans on updating anything anytime soon.

The rendering is done clientside, not serverside. The fact that Wynn is running 1.8 doesn't necessarily mean that the resource pack couldn't integrate special shaders, it really just depends on how compatibility works with the shader parts of the packs (If it can still load the textures without shading in old versions it could work, if not then no).

That said, adding shaders to the default pack is an awful idea, there's going to be a billion shader resource pack addons, when 1.17 comes out anyone who wants shaders will be able to get them easily.

Shaders already make some quests infuriating because you can't see, I had to install fullbright just so i could see

I'm 99% sure that this doesn't affect shader lighting, as it is done differently. Some shaders have this slider in their shader settings like Chocapic13, but it only goes up to 5. Even with both maxed, I still can't see.

If anything, the server performance actually gets worse after 1.13, It's why semi-large servers like 2b2t are still in 1.12, and why we dont have any 1.13+ content (other than sounds)
Theres this video that explains it well in general

Not server-side stuff, it will stay on 1.8
