As snapshots of 1.17 trickle in, I'm curious to know how this server will handle the change once the full release of 1.17 is out. From a building perspective, having the range of height go from 256 to 0, to now 320 to -64, is a huge plus for the extreme quality of builds on the server. Not to mention the swath of new mobs and decoration blocks to populate the world.

Obviously, 3rd party mods like Wynntils would need to update themselves, but that's their problem, so its not worth discussing, in regards to the server as a whole.

I'm not very technical with Minecraft, so if anyone who's smarter than me knows that more server-side stuff could break, or can foresee any issues with a server that demands 1.17 as a base version, any info would be an interesting read.

To me, it would be stupid to limit the server to the standard 256-0 range, when a much higher and deeper range exists. Would there even be a reason to not switch to 1.17 only once it is out, or at least a stable release is?

This video kinda explains why 1.13+ content (from drowned mobs and tridents to piglins) doesnt exist in Wynncraft

honestly i seriously doubt wynncraft will have 1.17 support because the height limit changes could actually fucking erase the server with some kind of corruption

i think 1.16 will be the maximum it supports

As @HoboMaggot noted, the performace would get much worse.

It would require a complete rewrite, because afaik 1.8 (yes, the server runs on that version) and 1.16+ differ a lot.
That would take many months, during which there would be no dev-side content created (new mechanics, classes etc., quests and builds could still be created).
And then you would have to change the system so it supports new features, almost surely breaking past versions.

    TLDR:
The cost as of now is way too high for them to consider it, perhaps when servers will be able to run on multiple cpu cores, but it is not guaranteed

It's something we ask ourselves often in the team, but the truth is what the video above shows, over the years the support for servers has been lacking from mojang, we used to move up a version with each releases basically, but nowadays, with all the changes that has been done to Minecraft and the amount of fixing it would require with the added issues it would cause to server stability and overall playability, it makes it hard to consider updating to the newer version ^^
I think at some point we will probably have to update to at least 1.12, that would already require a lot of fixing (afaik) but could provide a lot of features that we definitely could use.
(It's also dependant on what versions most players are using, so there's that to consider too).

Honestly, all the updates after 1.12.2 could be considered minecraft 2.0. 1.13.2 kinda screwed over servers and changed command blocks, 1.14.4 changed a lot of stuff, 1.15.2 optimized a lot of stuff, 1.16.5 once again changed a lot of stuff, and 1.17 changes the build height. I'm not an expert on technical stuff, but command blocks, especially /execute (which probably consists of at least a fourth of Wynncraft command blocks), changed a lot over the last few years. Probably all the plug-ins would have to be updated, and Voxelsniper only works in 1.12.2, which is pretty much responsible for at least the base of most Wynncraft builds and terrain.

I would think that /testfor would be used a lot more than /execute but don't have experience with how Wynncraft writes their commands.

/testfor was removed in 1.13, so Wynncraft might not want to use it. They could be setting invisible scoreboard values and testing those, but I barely use /scoreboard.

Yeah ik but I'd thought the server itself (running on 1.8) would execute the command blocks
