It's not because an update took low time to come out that it's a good one.
Man, putting 1.20 below 1.15 just because Wynnter Update didn't take long to came is the stupidest thing.

Did you really take the time to see the work behind Gavel Reborn at this point ?
Ok it's buggy but man Wynnter Update didn't add even 1/8 of what Gavel Reborn did.

The time an update takes is absolutely relevant to the quality of an update. If it takes three months to come out, I'm not going to expect much from it, the fact that it included a seasonal event on top of some basic patch stuff is why I like it. Wynnter fair might not be the greatest piece of content, but it was something new and special which I think people underestimate. 1.15 also came with the promise of Corkus in the near future and gave the community something positive to look forward to. As it is now, as a community we have no idea what direction the game is headed in or what the next patch (if there is one) will be. The worst part of Gavel Reborn for me is the disappointment from all the hype they built which could have been avoided if they were more open about what was and was not going to be in the update.

Also, I took so much time to see the update that I wrote 14 pages about it, if anyone is qualified to talk about the update it's probably me.

Okay but at this point it's like you are just trying to clash the update because you didn't like it.
With the amount of work did in only one year (because, yes, for such an addition of content one year is not that much even with unfinished and buggy parts) I don't understand how a "qualified" guy like you can put this update so low when it's largely improving such a piece of content that is Gavel.

Saying you don't understand how I came to my conclusion doesn't mean anything given the fact that I wrote a couple hundred words in my post specifically saying what I didn't like about it. After playing the beta for two months I decided that I don't like how they handeled tomes, pets, the rebuilds and a bunch of other stuff. If you don't understand or disagree with something specific I said let me know and I can clarify, I'm not going to repeat what I've already said multiple times now.

I specifically put the update on the bottom of my list because I don't like it, that's the entire point of making a ranking, to put the updates I liked at the top and the ones I didn't like at the bottom. If you want to show off what your ranking looks like and justify your picks be my guest, I would love to discuss it.

As for the one year developement, Gavel Reborn was probably in development for a lot longer then one year, much like every other Wynn update since they work on updates in parallel. Regardless of that, 1.18 and 1.19 had a very similar development time to 1.20 yet they somehow managed to bring in more detailed, well thought out content which affected the game in what I would consider to be a positive way.

1.18 did add one particularly nice thing, which is armor stand mobs. I think that's the best general game addition out of all of these three updates.

Not speaking for anyone else, but shaman is the first think I wrote about for 1.19. That said, the reason why a lot of people don't mention it is because it's a bit controversial, I also don't think there are that many shaman mains out there compared to any of the other classes. It's cool that it was added, but to people who don't use the class it's sadly just dead content which is the issue with adding new classes.

While I haven’t played all of 1.20, I’d still argue that it doesn’t deserve to be in its place. Especially not Wynnter or the initial Gavel update. I get it that you want to take into account how long it took; but that doesn’t really work for the same reason that a wedding cake isn’t as good as a cupcake. Both are fine for what they cost to make and most people will like both, but to say that it’s just as good or better to have a cupcake instead of a wedding cake at a wedding just isn’t true.

A lot of people hated 1.18 bc it was centered around professions. While there was other features I enjoyed like D&D and armor stand mobs, professions were the meat and potatoes of it. So professions should be the factor that most influences its rank by far. Beyond the problem of centering an entire update for only a fraction of a percent of player base, it just simply wasn’t a good feature. They’re completely useless for the low to mid game, had (and to some extent still do) game breaking balance issues such as lapis, customization is lacking, and it’s pay to win through bombs. Most of all, they’re simply not worth the time put into them. The amount of ingredients for leveling crafting in the later levels even WITH bombs is absolutely ludicrous. The game was fine without it in terms of obtaining gear and fighting. Yes, I understand that it’s for people who like to grind. Here’s the thing though; grinding for extreme amounts should only be reserved for the endgame. Like how level 106 is an Easter egg and doesn’t make all the previous levels an unbearably slow. I hated how the main feature of 1.18 was practically exclusive to a fraction of the player base and no one else would be allowed to enjoy them by changing them. That to me was absolute bullshit bc it was such a huge feature and Road to Dern got delayed for it. And I feel like it’s a bit hypocritical to justify 1.20’s place with something like raids being unbalanced, while ignoring how unbalanced and outright broken professions were for months after they released. Not to mention being not worth it reward-wise.

First, that analogy is bad, if a wedding cake and a cupcake took the same amount of time and resources to make then nobody would ever make cupcakes. The time something takes relative to how much it brings to the table is a very important metric in determining how good something is. If it takes 3 times as long and brings the same amount of content to the table, the update with a quicker turn around is going to be better. I don't want to wait around for a year for something disappointing, it's kind of hard to be disappointing if there was no expectations in the first place. If 1.20 had only taken 6 months or even 9 months I would have been much more fond of it. The fact that it took as long as 1.18 and 1.19 but offered so much less is one of my main problems with it.

It doesn't make sense to me why you would weigh features based on their importance to the update, the fact that 1.18 was about professions doesn't make the trade market and the total world rebuild any less important as features. In fact, the trade market is single handedly the reason why I have 1.18 at the top, everything else was just a nice bonus which pushed it even higher. If you want to talk about game balance, the trade market made the game more balanced then ever before, it gave players an opportunity to make money without being active on the forums and it gave people the ability to sell items without being online which made assembling builds significantly easier among many other things. Completely dismissing the trade market when talking about 1.18 is equivalent to not talking about the addition of Corkus in 1.16 or Gavel in 1.14, it's just not a fair assessment.

Professions might not be for everyone, but they don't (or at least didn't) affect any other part of the game, if you weren't interested in them you could just not do them. Better yet, if you chose to not spend the time to do them you could benefit from crafted items by buying them off others. As for them being grindy and pay to win, I don't completely agree, I managed to get all my gatherings and craftings up to 90 without profession parties, mostly without DXP weekends. I couldn't have gotten to 110 and 100 without the bombs, but the main use for crafting (for me at least) is consumables which I didn't need 100 for anyways. I also don't care about professions being pay to win either, it's extremely clear the server needs more money to survive and the bombs are far less disgusting to me then what they did with Champion.

I also never said raids were bad because they were unbalanced, I said a whole ton of negative things about them but unbalanced is definitely not one of them. I did call the game unbalanced, but that's a problem with the build system, not with raids.

I was debating back and forth on whether to respond to this or not, and as you can see I went with one of them.

The main gripe I have with this listing is that 1.20 doesn't feel like it deserves last place. I feel that's an unfair listing. I've criticized 1.20 myself to a good degree and for me it isn't the best update for me to have played. However, what 1.20 did do very well is lay out the foundations for future content and updates, especially Raids.
Depending on how flexible they've made these new features and systems (Both coding-wise and scripting-wise for GMs and such), they can be expanded on much more. The content that was released alongside with these new systems respectively was so-so (Orphion being the exception imo). However I believe if taken to their pinnacle and if done right in the future, the content that can be made from them can be very good. I honestly expect future major-lore Endgame Raids (Such as the Dern Beast raid and potentially a Fruma Queen raid) to be done to a good degree, and possibly be on a larger scale and be suitable for more than 4 level 106 players.
The Guild System has room for both improvement and expandability. I believe the vision that Salted was aiming for with Guilds was accomplished, however it's debatable on whether or not this vision was well-received by the Guild Community. However, the Guild Update for me sends a signal that Wynncraft will be doing a better job with updating and managing Guild content in the future. Hopefully I'm not wrong about that and we see cooler additions for Guilds, maybe like Guild Minigames or something.
Housing can be improved on for sure. More blocks, more things to do, maybe minigames and social activities.

While I do agree that the content that 1.20 brought in was not the best Wynncraft has done imo, the systems that it has brought in shows potential. Given time and balancing I honestly think that they could be used to create high-quality content that is well received by all players.

Starting with guilds first, I don't really care if Salted says he accomplished his goal with guilds, I really don't. Nothing added to guilds in this update are remotely relevant to anyone in a guild with recruit or recruiter rank, all the effort that was put into guilds was put in so a small fraction of the player base could enjoy it. There were so many things guilds needed that would actually improve the guild experience, mainly some sort of in game recruiting system, that would have actually improved guilds. The fact that Salted refused to bump the nerfed player cap during the two month beta only to back track on that stance a week after the update dropped is enough proof for me to show that the guild changes were grossly mismanaged.

For the actual content of 1.20, I get that a lot of the new features are going to act as a base for new content, but my issue isn't with the content, it's with the bases that content is built on. I think raids are fundamentally bad in their implementation. The content isn't the issue, adding more raids isn't going to convince me that raids are good. Does that mean that there can't be a good raid? No, but it'll be good despite being a raid, not by virtue of being a raid. Raids have fundamental issues which can't be fixed through small patches, mainly the level cap requirement, the inability to preview rooms, the reward system and the buff system. I think there are some good ideas in there, but if the system doesn't work then it hardly matters.

I feel the same about tomes and especially pets. The state of both of those is a complete joke which can only be fixed with a total rework, which just begs the question of why they would implement them poorly if they're going to need to completely redo them in order for them to be good.

If this update was just about raids and tomes, or was just about housing, or was just about pets and they focused on actually doing a good job at one thing, this update could have been great, but they didn't, they spread themselves too thin and forgot that the most important part of making an MMORPG fun is depth. Say what you will about 1.15, at the very least it did what it was supposed to do well which isn't something I can say about 1.20. Wynnter fair was awesome and is a fun distraction from the endless grind every time it rolls around because it's something different. 1.15 didn't over promise, it nailed it's launch and it only took a couple months which are things I value in an update.

Ok, I know you did mention quests in your full review, but this statement is just... blatantly wrong. Quests and build reworks were a huge part of the update, and they were almost all agreed to be really good (I personally quite like new Cinfras and such, but I know plenty of people don't). Yes, 1.18 remade more builds, but 1.20 remade a lot more quests and added a ton of secret discoveries, so I don't really think you can argue that 1.18 automatically gets to be better in the revamps section. I personally do care more about quests and secret discoveries than the average player, but 12 minor quest revamps, 13 major quest revamps (15 including underwater and enzan's brother), 3 new quests, and 45 new secret discoveries are a huge improvement and I'm kind of annoyed you tried to say that other things are "really all there was". Gavel was massively improved by all the revamps, much more than anything was in 1.18. That's not to say there weren't other good things in 1.18, but I don't see why it gets revamp points and you just ignore 1.20's. (Again, I know you mention the revamps elsewhere, but they're completely missing from your review in this thread, and were one of the biggest parts of the update.)

I do want to argue about tomes! Fun! Ok, so I do admit that the way you get them is kind of annoying - no one likes random lotteries, especially locked behind the hardest content in the game. It would also be nice if they were actually noticeably better at higher rarities, I haven't done that many raids but from what I've seen they aren't balanced very well for their rarity (fableds can be better than mythics, that kind of thing). That being said, I disagree that the buffs themselves and slots are bad. It's quite nice to just get to have a bunch of passive buffs to help you as you play (admittedly, not so much when you're already max level, but still), and I think restricting the number of slots and/or making them more powerful/unique would just take away from their nice position as slappy passive buffs. I can kind of get why you don't like them compared to other types of items, but we didn't really have anything like that before and I quite like the idea.

    ?????
If LI is hard now, it's because of 1.20, not 1.16. Pre-1.20 LI was quite easy to power through with a decent build if you knew what you were doing. (Having done so over 64 times, I can definitely vouch for it having been easy if you were prepared.) I haven't done much 1.20 LI, but during hotfix 6 with an ETF build, it was at the very least as hard as 1.19 LI for me, so 1.20 definitely made it as hard as it is now. It's also very much not as hard as raids imo, but even if it is, you're still crediting 1.20, so I don't see the point of this argument. Besides, you're comparing 1.16 and 1.19 here, and 1.19 also came with a big new endgame challenge - EO is a bit more predictable than LI, but it's still very hard, honestly a bit harder than 1.19 LI in many ways.

Are you saying 1.20 brought the same amount of content as 1.15? 1.15 brought almost nothing from what I can see in the changelog, all it really did was set the stage for Corkus, but that doesn't really count as new content. 1.20 brought 30 new/revamped quests and 45 secret discoveries, along with revamped builds all over Gavel and a few in other areas. Waiting 3 months for something isn't really that long, but I'd much rather wait a year for 30 quests and 45 secret discoveries than a quarter of a year for 1 quest, some music, and a teaser for the next update. (They both added more than that, of course, that's just a simplification for comparison. Also, the analogy is saying that it can be better to have a large piece of content for a large cost of time or money, not proposing that they both take the same amount of time. Even if you can get a cupcake or batch of cupcakes for a cheaper/equal cost per cake volume, people will still want large wedding cakes. Similarly, even if we accept that 1.15 had a better/equal content to waiting time ratio, which I don't, I'd still like to have a large update like 1.20 sometimes. I wouldn't mind a few smaller ones again, to be honest, but that doesn't mean the big ones are all bad.)

Also, if you don't have to consider professions being bad in an overall ranking of 1.18, why should anyone have to consider housing or pets in an overall ranking of 1.20? Profs were part of the update, just because there was other good stuff doesn't change that. I've already gone over how I feel about the amount of new content in 1.20, but I do still think it's a bigger addition than the non-profs stuff in 1.18. At least quests and such were treated as a major part of 1.20, in 1.18 the main addition was clearly profs, with build revamps and other stuff (including the trade market) on the side. Yes, TM may have been an important addition, but it wasn't main content for the update and everyone knew it.

One last thing, I will admit, 1.20 is the first update I've ever been through in Wynn, so I definitely am somewhat biased in its favor, and I can't really speak for how the other updates impacted the game personally, or how smoothly they were released compared to 1.20. But, going by the amount of content added or improved alone, I think 1.20 deserves a spot in the top few updates, and definitely not last place.

1.18 isn't better because of the rebuilds, it's better because it had the trade market and a few good ideas and developed them really well. I personally prefer the rebuilds that 1.18 brought to the table and I think the builds in 1.18 improved the quality of the game a lot more then the 1.20 builds did. I also don't really care that 1.20 had a bunch of quests, they aren't long term or repeatable content and the game already has enough of them for the area. 1.20 did bring a lot of secret discoveries, but I also don't really care, that isn't the kind of content I'm interested in. There's a reason why I don't talk about that stuff a lot, and that's because I honestly don't really care about those additions, they're not interesting enough to make me want to log in just to walk through areas I've been through a billion times looking for small new details. If you value content like that, that's a good reason to say 1.20 is a good update, but I don't, so I won't.

The issue with tomes isn't the tomes themselves, it's with the way they're designed to be used. This game is a game about choices and tradeoffs, you chose what armor to wear, what weapon to run, what to spend your money on and what content to play, you only have limited resources so you can't do everything and try everything. Tomes have no choices and no tradeoffs. They add nothing to the game because you don't need to ever chose what tomes to use. If there were three tome slots instead of 12, that would at least be interesting since you need to make a call on what tomes are the best in any given situation, but that isn't the case. There's only one best tome per slot, and the way the slots are designed means that can't be changed by adding in more tomes. If you want to keep all 12 slots, then they could make it more interesting by having an activation cost and a time limit, maybe you need to pay 2 soul points to activate a tome for a couple hours, that way you keep the slap on feeling and utility of them while still giving them some interesting mechanic. As they are now, tomes are poorly designed and add nothing, you can say you like them and that's fine but it doesn't change the fact that they totally fail at being a progression system which is what they were intended to be as stated by Salted.

I only ran LI once in the beta, when I said I found CC easier then LI I was comparing it to 1.16 LI, not 1.20 LI. 1.20 LI is without question harder then CC, but I also think 1.16 LI is also harder. EO is a bit hit or miss for me, if I'm feeling it I find it easier, but some days it's tougher for me, the main issue I have with EO is that the first half of it is just bad, the only really good room besides the boss is the parkour, though I have a bit of a soft spot for the first room too. Getting back to CC, the only reason why people find it hard is because they don't have a good team composition which to me is the same as having a bad build. I wouldn't call LI hard because I can't beat it in level 50 gear. If you bring the right team, it's a complete and total joke, you just stand in one place shooting arrow storms until it's dead or you need to move over a little.

I never said that 1.15 brought as much content as 1.20, what I was pointing out that the analogy being used was bad and that time is an important factor in considering how good something is. All other things equal, I prefer the update which comes out quicker. I never said 1.15 was equal to 1.20, but time was a big consideration for why I think it's better and I wanted to defend that position. Of course 1.20 had more content, but after a year without any real updates and almost complete radio silence it's expected that 1.20 would have more content. To put it another way, 1.20 doesn't get a free pass to 6th place because it had more content, the content needs to be worth the time it took and to me, 1.15 did a better job of that then 1.20.

I don't think professions are bad, I actually like them a lot, but even if I hated them I would still call 1.18 the best update of all time. You could remove everything from 1.18 except for the trade market and double the time it took for 1.18 to come out and I would still think it was the best update by a mile because the trade market is the single greatest addition to Wynncraft of all time, including the Gavel ID system. The trade market solved Wynn's single biggest issue and made the economy actually functional beyond a couple shitty shops on the forums. It gave people a chance to make money without needing to be extremely active on the forums. It allows everyone to make almost any build they could want without needing to spend hours sourcing every single piece and over paying for them all on the forums. Market efficiency is based on information and the trade market gave every single player access to a database worth of information. Before 1.18, there was no good way to price check, now you can just look for similar items on the market. I could go on and on about how much better the game is better, even comparing 1.20 or any other update to 1.18 is a total joke for that one feature alone. If 1.20 had included a guild recruiting tool which worked like the trade market, it would be in the number two spot without question, but it didn't, for some reason...

Compared to 1.19, 1.18 and 1.16, 1.20 barely added any content. Raids are basically dungeons without a reason to run them multiple times and every other update has included at least two dungeons, every update here has had reworked quests, some more then others but 1.20 didn't have that many more then the next closest, 1.16 came with LI which was actually meta defining, 1.18 had professions which was at least something to work on over time and 1.19 had major ID's and fabled items to hunt after. Stuff like housing is cool, but I would take LI or professions over it any day of the week.

Champion is an OP rank and nobody can convince me otherwise. Have fun trying to level up lvl 80+ profs without bombs when all the prof bomb worlds are flooded by Champions immediately because they have the bomb bell and reserved slots. If you're lucky enough to get into one you'll see it's mainly a Champions club.
