Sans actually was intentional. Basically, I made Papyrus, and people on the team started asking "Undertale reference?" and I had no idea what they were talking about. I made Sans and a few other items(Undying, Heartache, Determination, Mercy, Someone Else's Knife, Influence) after this.

I've put a few references to other games into the items I've made, let me try and name a few from memory

There are a lot of Destiny 2 references on the shaman weapons that Major named, such as Loaded Question, One Thousand Voices, Graviton Lance, Crimson, and others

Eclipse was named after a professional overwatch player from Austria who had recently made waves at the Overwatch World Cup in 2018, he was 16 at the time and was the standout player for the team on flex support.

Prestidigitation is named after this song:

Darkweaver is inspired by the subtle knife from the Golden Compass trilogy

Nah, you were accurate. The idea was that the weapon was lazy, just like Sans. It's incredibly basic and basically has "default" stats.

 

If I'm not mistaken, the Lazarus Pit in gavel is a reference to the Lazarus Pit in DC Comics.

 

I just assumed it was a Dungeons and Dragons reference

 

I believe Elphaba and Lucio from 'A Journey Beyond' are references to Elphaba and Fieryo from Wicked

 

The "Enter the Dojo" quest and area is a reference to the Karate Kid franchise movies.

 

This may be a bit far-fetched, but the relik Grateful Dead may be a reference to a Stand of the same name in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. If not, it's still very likely a reference to the rock band "Grateful Dead". Back to my previous point, multiple other reliks are named after songs/bands, the same way as Stands are named in JoJo (eg. October Fires, Sweden).

It's not specifically a JoJo reference, just musical shoutouts. Grateful Dead is a band, yes, but it was more of an oblique, reaching-sort-of-reference to Earthbound. One of the areas in the game, Peaceful Rest Valley, was called Grateful Dead Valley in the Japanese version, which happens to be a shoutout to the band, but it was more intended as a shoutout to the area rather than the band.

Since, very early on in development, Shaman was up for consideration as the Bard class, many of the reliks ended up being planned somewhat early and thus had a lot of musical references to their names.

 

I would have preferred it to be a Bard class because the shaman class and what the game describes as shamanism seem very different.

 

Might also be a TABS reference although I think the Pirate Captain may have been added to TABS after Galleon's Graveyard came out.

Allegro, Largo and a few others are references to different tempos.

Thriller is a reference to the Michael Jackson song.

Led Balloon is a reference to Lead Zeppelin.
