Those below are probably "stairs" made with slabs, while the regular stairs are just regular stairs

 

They probably wanted the staircase to be a certain length and height, so slabs were needed for it


Also despite this picture being ancient, is it weird that I only now realized the trees shown look different from the ones currently on the trail?

you're right. They do look different and far more detailed which I'm kinda hyped for but also a little worried about lag.

The staircase was potentially used to test the behaviour of NPCs on stairs. So they used both types to see the difference. As we know slabs and stairs tend to glitch NPCs into the ground and stuff (walking NPCs as in AJB) so maybe that's what they were working on.

 

I believe these updated oak trees have less leaves and were designed to be slightly less laggy. I could be wrong, but I think they're better performance-wise (and they look cool)!

 

actually a fair point. Leaves (on any settings but fast) are pretty resource consuming so it would probably decrease client side lag. And yes they definetly do look cool though I think those changes would be most necessary in Nivla forest xD

 

maybe its to test if NPCs work when standing still on the lower half of stairs? idk
