There's been a lot of shit going down recently in YouTube's beauty community, and it's all centered around Jeffree Star, Shane Dawson, Tati Westbrook, and James Charles. I swear the first three are trying to one up each other in who is the worst person; they're making James Charles look a saint...

While I would like to go over everything, there's just too much. So for now, I want to focus on Shane Dawson because what happened to him was the most recent and I find him personally to be the most disturbing. For those that don't know, Shane Dawson is one of the biggest on the platform and has been there for awhile now. He started off in 2008 making live-action skits like Smosh but more edgy and vulgar. He rose up again due to his documentaries about other celebrities such as the Paul brothers and recently by partnering with Jeffree Star, one of the biggest names in the beauty community.

Now I could make a whole other thread about Jeffree Star, but in short, he got into some beef with Tati and James and to put it lightly, is a terrible human being. Like blackmail, drugging people, rape, and revenge porn kind of human being. This video does a good job explaining the situation if you want to know more:

So what's up with Shane then? Not only has clips of him in blackface and using racial slurs resurfaced, but also clips of him being really REALLY inappropriately around children. Like talking about sex to his 12-year-old cousin, genuinely wondering why it's not okay for adults to masturbate to child porn in an interview, and sexualizing and moaning over a poster of Jaden Smith's sister Willow Smith. When the latter surfaced, the Smith family called him out on Twitter, getting Shane in the news: https://twitter.com/i/events/1277037164795052034
Don't even get me started on the bestiality...

How does Shane respond? By deleting videos worth 1.4 billion views to cover up any further clips and taking down his response on twitter. The tipping point was when Tati posted a video called, "Breaking My Silence," where she tore into Shane and Jeffree and made some disturbing claims about them. Shane then did a livestream and had a mental breakdown, cursing out Tati and his friend that was in the room.

If you want a more in-depth explanation, I highly recommend dangelowallace's video, "The exact moment Shane Dawson's career ended."

Who know what's the most shocking of all though? That this is all happening NOW. Celebrities have been cancelled quick left and right for posting dumb tweets or taking a controversial stand an issue. Meanwhile, Shane has putting on minstrel shows for kids online, making out with his pets and constantly sexualizing them on his Instagram, and raised constant red flags around kids since 2008 and just now he's finally getting cancelled! Over 12 years of this! The amount of atrocious stuff Shane Dawson has done is so large that it's almost comical.

Take another YouTuber Contrapoints for an example. You know what almost got her cancelled months ago? For having a trans man do a voice over for a 10-second quote who implied something controversial about non-binary people years ago... Like nothing in the actual video or what the quote said. They weren't even friends or anything either...

    I'm just speechless right now...

TL;DR Shane Dawson is a racist pedophile who sexually harasses animals, the beauty community is the ugliest community on YouTube, and it's absolutely absurd how Shane has repeatedly gotten away with all of his disgusting behavior for more than 12 years.

Shane seems like a guy I'd like to stay far away from IRL. He's done so many fucked up things that "it being in the past" or "a joke" shouldn't apply to him here.

The problem (or a problem) is that canceling does not work. James Charles got canceled, Tati got canceled, iDubbbz, JonTron, ProJared, Keemstar, PewDiePie, kingani, the list goes on and on and on. But check out their channels and you'll see they're all doing just fine. I think the reason is that once someone gets canceled, everyone gets mad, some other person retorts, there arises a confusing back-and-forth, eventually everyone apologises, the day is saved and everyone goes on with their lives. I don't want to sound like a we live in a society gamer but that is kinda how it goes, every time. And the reason why nothing happens is because canceling has no permanent consequences. A channel starts drama or gets involved in it in some way, they and several people bite the bullet of losing a fifth of their followers, then make an apology video, and that's it. The bad people's voices haven't been silenced, even though they should have been.

Thing is also, for the people who were actually innocent, ex: Projared. It hurts them a lot. He got mentally fucked over, reputation hurt, and the stigma of him being a kid diddler lasts. His channel is still there but he lost a lot still.

That’s true; though not all canceling is the same in magnitude. And YouTube has kicked off creators before like Alex Jones and Stefan Molyneux. I’d argue that him being a pedophile makes it even more warranted.

I'm not expert on any of this, but here's my two cents, take them for what they're worth. It's too easy to get a large following and become popular, despite being a despicable person. It might even be easier because you don't have any of those stupid "morals" or "values" that might get in the way, and people love the spectacle awful people make.

This means that when an awful person gets exposed, their fans (who were either ignorant, denying it or sometimes in favor of it) either ditch them or stay. If their YouTube channel or whatever their primary platform is gets canceled, logically they're done as an online entertainer. But they're not. It's really, really, really easy to recover, or to make a new one on a different site. Even the really awful people who get banned from nearly every platform eventually find a place to spew their hateful nonsense. Look at Stefan Molyneux. After being an absolutely disgusting person and getting banned from a number of platforms, he still has a loud voice online. He also shows why this works; he's an awful person, but his followers didn't doubt that - it's why they followed him in the first place.

Now, not all of these people are open about being awful. That doesn't usually work unless it's the brand of awful that sells (I hate that I can say this and it makes sense), but, once someone is established and popular it's hard to shut them down due to their large following. And of course there's always the more cynical argument that the platforms make a lot of money off of them, and it would hurt their profits to shut them down until they pass a certain threshold of awful. Remember, YouTube is only in it for the money (right or wrong, this is what makes their decisions) and until a creator gets enough negative press to make people angry at the platform they're on, they make money off of any popular channel regardless of what it says.

I haven't heard nor watched Stefan Molyneux for awhile now, though I did hear that Alex Jones is kinda dead or at least not what he used to be. And Milo Yinopolous is definitely a lot less powerful and out of the mainstream than before: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/59n99q/milo-yiannopoulos-says-hes-broke

While Milo got kicked off for other reasons (such as on Twitter for harassment), pedophilia was one of those reasons. So if Milo could get cancelled for pedophilia then Shane definitely should too. Could Shane still have a presence on the internet? Yes, though the goal is to make it as hard as possible for these people to have a large following. And it's a lot easier to do so on large social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, etc.

Furthermore, the reason why people are more willing to follow Alex Jones and Stefan Molyneux rather than Milo is because pedophilia is a dealbreaker on both sides of the political isle. Shane isn't even that political so you're not being a "radical" or "defying the mainstream narrative" by supporting Shane like you are with the others. Unless of course you are a pedophile and/or commit bestiality.

True. I was just pointing out how once a person is established, it can be hard to get rid of them, even if they're awful. I also think that until enough people complain, they platform they're on continues making money off of them, so there isn't a reason to get rid of them until it starts to hurt profits. Entertainers who happen to be bad people are usually still decent entertainers, and they have a large enough following that remains devoted even if they do say or do horrible things (citation: literally all of politics and half the entertainment industry), which makes the platform they're on more money than is lost by people complaining.

If you hate a YouTube channel, you don't watch it, but you probably don't boycott YouTube. Meanwhile, that channel probably draws in a lot of views from people who don't know/care that the owner advocates eating babies or whatever. Is this a terrible system? Maybe. YouTube doesn't think so, and they're really the only one whose opinion matters until people start complaining and taking action.

You'd think. But I think that unless he advocates it or talks about it in a positive lightit's unlikely that it will make big enough news or cause enough anger that it outweighs however much profit he brings in. I think it's more likely he'd get arrested for something than YouTube taking down a creator who makes them money.

He did though. He got in the news for Willow Smith and he talks about it in a positive light all the time. Like implying he is one, talking about sex to his underage cousins, kissing one of his fans on the lips, groping his other teenage fans, his entire show about a sexually abused puppet who talks about sex, etc.

He may have gotten away before, but he’s never had a mental breakdown like this before and I still haven’t heard anything from him.

Yikes. It's weird how much people care about that stuff when it's convenient for them to do so, and how little they care when it isn't. Weird may be the wrong word. Sad? Angering? I've never bought into the idea that the famous and wealthy can be entirely above the law so to speak, but there's definitely a grain of truth to that. Also, I am wondering how explicit you'd have to be to get banned, and how often. It seems like the sort of thing that should be a pretty quick thing, but YouTube moves at a slow pace, especially when it involves doing something that could hurt their profits (I may be too cynical here, but I'm pretty confident that's the main reason why stuff like this lasts for so long). Think about how long it took people like Alex Jones or Stefan Molyneux to get banned, and the things they said, and just how high profile they were.

The bottom line is, no matter what they say, their fans will still watch them. Teenagers are stupid (Sorry if you're still a teen, but that's just how it goes. If it makes you feel any better, that doesn't change for a long time.), and even the smartest ones frequently completely lack even a semblance of common sense or critical thinking at times. If people watch them, YouTube makes a profit. I'd assume they axed people like Molyneux because of how (in)famous he became, and by hosting him, they were linking themselves with him. For someone who is far lower profile, they probably wouldn't care as much. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm too cynical and expect the worst of YouTube, and they really are trying to fix these problems. But that's my opinion on it.
