    there seem to be bots all over the world, in every lobby. mindlessly walking around in circles, not picking up items or being targeted by mobs. i can't think of a reason for them other than increasing player count or to help with some sort of world loading. does anyone know why they are here?

    They are real players' ghosts. This feature lets you see where other people are and on which server. E. G. this can help you find a party for a quest, because you can see who's in the same quest area as you. You can disable them with /toggle playerghosts.
